Eric Steel is a filmmaker and producer, most notable for his role in the production of Shaft, Angela's Ashes, and the controversial documentary The Bridge.
Steel's most controversial work and his first attempt at directing is the 2006 documentary The Bridge.
In obtaining permits to film the bridge for one year, Eric Steel did not reveal to the Golden Gate Bridge committee that his goal was to film people committing suicide by leaping off the bridge.

Steel is the Director of the Program Office at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Steel has a technical background in chemical imaging and microanalysis with emphasis in nanotechnology, chemical and biological threats related to homeland security, and environmental applications.
Steel came to NIST in 1978 and has initiated and developed several research programs in such areas as environmental particle characterization, chemical and biological agent analysis and standardization to combat threats of terror, nuclear treaty monitoring, analytical laboratory quality systems and accreditation, and nanotechnology device characterization including 3D nanoscale chemical imaging.

That's what you learn when you watch The Bridge, a film directed by Eric Steel and shown this afternoon at the Kabuki as part of the SF International Film Fest.
Which of course is exactly the anguish the film crew was going through never knowing when, or who; Eric Steel told us in the Q and A afterward that there was no way they could predict who would jump, or not.
Update: It has been brought to my attention that this post is being read by suicide researchers, so I uploaded audio from the first ten minutes of questions in the Q & A with director Eric Steel, directly after the film screened in San Francisco for the first time.

Eric Steel is the producer and director of 2006's "The Bridge." He began his career as a creative executive at Walt Disney Pictures after graduating from Yale University in 1985.
Along with the acquisition and development of many of the company¹s most prominent feature projects, he was the executive producer of "Angela's Ashes," and co-producer of "Bringing Out The Dead" and "Shaft."
In 2003, Steel formed his own company, Easy There Tiger, and is currently developing several documentaries and features, including "Julie/Julia," a co-production with Amy Robinson, based on the book of the same title by Julie Powell to be written and directed by Nora Ephron for Columbia Pictures.
