Eric Williams   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
In 1944 his book Capitalism and Slavery argued that the British abolition of their Atlantic slave trade in 1807 was motivated primarily by economics; by extension, so was the emancipation of the slaves and the fight against the trading in slaves by other nations.
Before Williams the historiography of this issue had been dominated by (mainly) British writers who generally were prone to depict Britain's actions as unimpeachable.
It should be noted that Williams was heavily involved in the movements for independence of the Caribbean colonies and had a fairly obvious motive to impugn the colonial power.

Raffique Shah - Put Parliament in the 'Breakfast Shed'
The Twin Towers in downtown Port of Spain (now renamed the Eric Williams Plaza) was one of the most expensive and ambitious projects that the late Dr Williams undertook.
They were built in the 1970s, a period when, with the price of oil rocketing to over US$20 a barrel, Williams could proudly boast: "Money is no problem." As the population grew and demands for office space grew with it, these buildings later became fully functional.
Similarly, in the short six years that he was Prime Minister, Basdeo Panday bulldozed his way into constructing a $1.6 billion airport terminal that many of his supporters insist should bear his name.

The right has now turned the left’s critique of power on its head, and accused the news establishment of somehow having a "liberal" bias.
In less of a response than a lament, Eric Alterman in his well-documented book What Liberal Media?: The Truth About Bias and the News, suggests that the drumbeat of accusation from the right has devalued the critical importance of "good journalism" in the eyes of the public and that objectivity should be resuscitated.
Recently, the Columbia Journalism Review weighed in with a long and studied feature, arguing that the concept should be reformed and more "grounded in reality," wherein reporters admit some inescapable subjectivity.
