Ericales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ericales are a large and diverse order of dicotyledons.
Mycorrhiza is an interesting property, frequently associated with the Ericales.
In additional, some families among the order are notable for their exceptional ability to accumulate aluminium (Jansen et al., 2004).

Because we were in need of a phylogeny of the ‘balsaminoid group’ at the base of the order Ericales, I made the exercise of looking into ‘hierarchical model’ Bayesian analysis to investigate the relationships in the order Ericales using some new data, but mainly Genbank data.
Ericales phylogeny reconstruction has not really lack of data, but a polytomy at the base of the order has been very difficult to resolve.
The two families are part of the basal Ericales ‘balsaminoid group’, which has been found in several phylogenetic analyses of molecular data with high support values.

2001 Meeting | Clethra barbinervis in the Ericales forms arbuscular mycorrhizae.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In the order Ericales, mycorrhizae of the ericoid, arbutoid, and monotropoid types are found among the various families, with ericoid mycorrhizae in the Ericaceae, Empetraceae, and Epacridaceae.
The mycorrhizal status of the family Clethraceae within the Ericales is unknown.
This study is to our knowledge the first report of the mycorrhizal status of a plant in the Clethraceae, and the first report of well-developed arbuscular mycorrhizae in any member of the Ericales.

The distribution of aluminium (Al) accumulation in the Ericales is surveyed, based on semi-quantitative tests of 114 species and literature data.
Although the interfamilial relationships within the Ericales require further research, the ability to accumulate high levels of Al appears to show considerable taxonomic significance.
While the majority of Al accumulating Ericales includes woody, tropical plants, the feature is remarkably present in several herbaceous Diapensiaceae, which have a distribution in cold to temperate areas.

ericoid   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The order Ericales is a worldwide group of closely related families, perhaps best known in the UK by the Ericaceae family - heathland plants such as Calluna (heather), Vaccinium and Erica.
It is likely that the success of the Ericales in this type of habitat is due to the endomycorrhizal associations they from - termed ericoid mycorrhizas.
Some members of the order Ericales form arbutoid and monotropoid associations, which are dealt with in their own section.

Arbutoid mycorrhizas are, like those of Ericoid and Monotropoid mycorrhizas, found in the plant order Ericales.
Like ericoid mycorrhizas, the family Ericaceae is represented, with arbutoid mycorrhizas being formed in the Arctostaphylos and Arbutus (shown right) genera.
Arbutoid associations are also found in the Pyrolaceae family of the Ericales order.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Dilleniidae -- Spring 1999
Historically, the Ericales were often called the Bicornes due to the two slender appendages associated with the typically inverted anthers.
Nonetheless, Lindley used the clear and obvious similarities between the family and the Ericales to position his Berberidales (which included Cyrillaceae) next to the Ericales.
To what extent Cronquist would have altered his classification of the Ericales as a result of the work published after his death can only be guessed.

Flowering Plants, Dicotyledons: Celastrales, Oxalidales, Rosales, Cornales, Ericales   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Book Description: In the present volume - the sixth of this series - 48 flowering plant families comprising a total of 712 genera are treated.
The concept of Ericales is largely expanded beyond its conventional limits to make it monophyletic and now includes parts of the erstwhile Ebenales, Lecythidales, Primulales and other orders.
The revised circumscription of families such as Ericaceae, Celastraceae and Cunoniaceae owes much to the application of recent molecular studies, and for the same reason in the primulalean families, a complete remodeling of family limits is proposed.
