  Erich Gamma: Summit Speaker
Erich is probably best known for his work on Design Patterns and JUnit.
Erich Gamma will share his insight on the Eclipse Project -- an open source software development project dedicated to providing a robust, full-featured, commercial-quality, industry platform for developing highly integrated tools -- and show you how your organization can benefit from the best of breed integrated tools that are bound to emerge from this effort.
Plus, Erich will reflect on the best practices for managing such a large project, involving distributed teams that include open source contributors working on wildly flexing requirements in a tough competitive market.

Gamma said the importance of this new factoring is already starting to surface, as IBM is releasing the Lotus Workplace platform to build on top of Eclipse's "generic workbench,"
Gamma said it will based on the notion of "an activity," or the grouping of related UI functionality together.

In this interview, Erich Gamma, co-author of the landmark book, Design Patterns, talks with Bill Venners about two design principles: program to an interface, not an implementation, and favor object composition over class inheritance.
In Part II: Erich Gamma on Flexibility and Reuse, Gamma discusses the importance of reusability, the risks of speculating, and the problem of frameworkitis.

 java.net: Contributing to Eclipse
The official enigmatic description is that "Eclipse is a universal tool platform, an open extensible integrated development environment (IDE) for anything and nothing in particular." These excerpts from Erich Gamma and Kent Beck's book Contributing to Eclipse: Principles, Patterns, and Plug-Ins give you the flavor of creating plug-ins for the Eclipse platform.

Erich Gamma Talks About Flexibility and Reuse
I just finished reading part 2 of the Bill Venners interview with Erich Gamma and Erich so eloquently distills some of what I was trying to say in a recent post.
I learned that the hard way, as clients are a fickle lot, and you can guess what they?ll ask for next as easily as you can guess the next super lotto numbers.
Erich?s approach to building an extensibility model with Eclipse reflects how I try to approach projects I work on.

AOP@Work: Design with pointcuts to avoid pattern density
At each step in their design, Gamma and Beck were faced with choices pitting, for example, usability against maintainability or understandability against composability.
Given their focus on usability, it seems odd for Gamma and Beck to see that developers write tests in different ways, but then insist that developers write tests in only one way: encapsulated as an object.
Gamma and Beck are following (I should say leading) what is by now standard operating procedure for design: find the key abstractions, encapsulate them in objects, and add patterns to arrange for various roles they play and services they offer.

· Erich Gamma on Improved User Experience for Eclipse 3.0 by Tom Donoghue on 12/29, 03:23 PM · Eclipse 3 rantingly evaluated as an MDA studio.
Eclipse is a badly designed, a slow work horse, and just because Erich Gamma has his name on it, doesn't make it worthy considering so far.
And although what you say about MDA has nothing to do with the the interview of Erich Gamma, I would like to reply on that part, because I have also been looking around in that area lately and I do not agree with you on the use of XSLT.
