In 1938, Hoepner is involved in planning by the military opposition around Franz Halder to overthrow Hitler in a coup.
Hoepner soon renews his contacts with the military opposition and in the following months repeatedly meets with Friedrich Olbricht and Ludwig Beck, later with Claus von Stauffenberg as well.
After the attempt on Hitler's life fails, Erich Hoepner is sentenced to death by the People's Court on August 8, 1944, and murdered the same day in Berlin-Plötzensee.
