The first official flight of the Heinkel He 176 V1 was on June 20, 1939 flown by Flugkapitän Erich Warsitz.* On the next day, June 21, the He 176 was demonstrated in front of some of the RLM leaders (Ernst Udet, Erhard Milch).
Udet was not impressed, and prohibited further tests due to the inherent dangers of rocket flight.
This photo was taken at Neuhardenberg and in the background can be seen one of the three He 112s also used in rocket propulsion tests.

In early March of 1937, Erich Warsitz climbed into the modified He112 V5 at a remote airstrip.
During the first ground trials, Warsitz ignited the rocket engine and the tiny aircraft shot off down the runway at full speed (the engine had no thrust variance, it was either full thrust or no thrust) and had he not cut the engine, would surely have looped into the ground.
A style was evolved to more control the runway trials but the aircraft would not leave the ground and this was due to the fact the wings were too small.
