The Erie Lackawanna Railway (AAR reporting mark EL), known as the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad until 1968, was formed from the 1960 merger of the Erie Railroad and the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad.
The Lackawanna route was severely affected by the decline of anthracite and cement traffic from Pennsylvania by the 1940s.
The Erie Lackawanna Railway was formed March 1, 1968 as a subsidiary of Dereco, the holding company of the Norfolk and Western Railway, and on April 1 the assets were transferred.

Erie passenger trains were usually made up with the RPO lpost office car directly behind the locomotive, followed by the storage mail cars and baggage car, followed in turn by one or more sleepers, the dining car, and several coaches.
The Erie Limited, which was the premiere train of the railroad, usually got the best equipment first, then the Lake Cities, and the maids of all work ran with semisuburban coaches that were suitable for either suburban or through line service and equipped accordingly.
One other Erie Railroad freight train that evolved into a family of trains all its own was the 98, a Chicago to New York manifest train, which was split at Marion into NE98 and NY 98, while the 98 itself carried traffic destined for the Buffalo and Rochester markets.

 LACKAWANNA TERMINAL RAILWAY
The Lackawanna Terminal Railway was formed in 1875 by the founders of the Morris and Essex Railroad.
Thousands of tons of coal were interchanged between the Lackawanna and CNJ at Hampton Junction, in Warren county, NJ destined to fire the coal furnaces of New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut.
Eventually, when the Morris and Essex and the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western were combined into one company, the two portions of the Lackawanna Terminal were absorbed in a perpetual lease agreement that remained in effect through the merger of the Erie and the Lackawanna railroads up to the formation of Conrail in 1976.

In the late 1960's, the Erie Lackawanna Railway was looking to replace its old and tired E8's and RS3's running commuter service out of Hoboken, New Jersey.
Another former Lackawanna brick station stands here, serving this once-former junction of the Lackawanna's Sussex Branch, traces of which can still be seen from the station parking lot.
The train now aimed itself north, and was doing track speed up the former Erie "Main Line." A lunch and photo stop was held at Ridgewood, perhaps one of the nicest stations and locales on NJ Transit.

The National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) awarded Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum a grant in June 2001, to fund in-part the restoration and erection of 8 railroad signals.
The National Railway Historical Society has advised HVRM that it has approved the museums request for the funds for the installation of the signals at North Judson.
Signals to be erected include a NKP 3 head signal, an Erie semaphore signal, a C&O 2 head signal, a NYC (Monon) single head 3 light signal, a Pennsylvania color position light signal and other signals that the signal committee may put in place.
