Dahlbergh completed his Frankfurt undertakings in 1654 and returned to his native country, where he found employment as a private tutor to two young noblemen, accompanying them on their journey to Italy and France.
Dahlbergh had most likely thought to bind the Suecia in a standard folio-format, not the oblong folio format that became the end result and which was barely known in Dahlbergh's days.

The History of the Royal Library
The library's sole income, 600 Daler in silver coins, a sum which had been set in 1703, was not sufficient to cover more than the purchase of one or two foreign journals and the binding of the Swedish printed materials, after deductions for the cost of stationery, candles and such.
In 1770, Parliament presented the library with the remaining stock of Erik Dahlbergh's Suecia antiqua et hodierna in a bid to boost its failing finances.
During the 1880s, the two institutions exchanged property, the Royal Library relinquishing its medieval parchment letters in exchange for medieval lawbooks, hand-written chronicles and Erik Dahlbergh's illustrations for Suecia antiqua et hodierna.
