  Erik Routley (1917-1982)
ERIK REGINALD ROUTLEY (1917-1982), was a scholar and an authority with keen insight, wit, grace and style.
Routley was born in Brighton, England, on 31 October 1917, four hundred years exactly (give or take eleven days for the new style calender) after Martin Luther nailed his theses to the church door at Wittenburg.
Erik once said that this was the only autobiographical fact about himself of which he was proud.

Psalm 98: New Songs of Celebration Render
Erik Routley (1917-1982) may be the most important hymnologist of the twentieth century.
The choice of words is unexceptionable: Routley has mastered the difference between "the lightning bug and the lightning." The smooth use of masculine and feminine rhymes (not a false rhyme on the page) and alliteration would carry the reader over many a worse misstep than occurs here.
Unlike Watts, Routley did not make a specifically Christian application, except where he substituted "friends of every nation" for "house of Israel." However, most Christians will already think of "salvation" as a theological technical term, rather than any kind of "rescue" or "deliverance" or "vindication" (which is the word's actual meaning).

I first met Erik Routley at the first American Guild of Organists convention I attended.
Routley spoke at many workshops and led Daily Morning Prayer at a hotel downtown.
While discussing Charles Wesley’s hymn Come, O Thou traveler Unknown Routley said that it was "...a meditation on a mystery," and a text he attempted to set to music several times.

Routley, a minister and former president of the United Reformed Church in England, is known in America as an author, composer, and lecturer.
The book is organized into twenty-eight "articles," each article including a short, but thorough commentary on the period, authors, and texts, as well as the complete text of representative hymns from the historical period discussed.
Routley's writing style is informal, but always stops short of being "chatty." He provides an amazing amount of information packed into a few pages in each "article," but never makes the reader feel unpleasantly full.

by "Randolph Runyon" A-mens by "Erik Johnson" Re: Amens on hymns..............
From: runyonr@muohio.edu (Randolph Runyon) Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 22:44:37 -0700 I take the position, with Erik Routley, that 98% (my estimate, not his) of "amens" that hymnals (old ones, for new ones, thank God, have abandoned = the practice) print are absurd, not to say an abomination unto the Lord.
Routley continues: "Ambrosian hymnody, however, very soon developed in monastic settings rather than controversial ones, and here we are on firm ground--their plainsong tunes always included an amen after = the doxology, which still always stood at the end.

 Hymnology: Hymnal Supplements
The period of hymnody after about 1970 has been called the "New English Renaissance" by Erik Routley and the "Hymn Explosion" by James Sydnor.
Erik Routley believed that the hymnal supplement phenomenon began in the early 1960's in Scotland with a series of ecumenical workshops whose purpose was "to explore new music for the church." [See: A Panorama of Christian Hymnody, Collegeville, MN: The Liturgical Press, 1979, pp.
Distributed to interested churches and individuals, the publications met with such success that the project was given to Galliard, Ltd. and Published in 1969 as New Songs for the Church I and II.

The Bulletin of the Hymn Society was first issued in October 1937, edited by the Revd Dr Millar Patrick.
The first 41 issues were serially numbered only; and it was not until the change of editorship in January 1948, when Erik Routley succeeded Millar Patrick, that it was decided to designate a Volume Number.
A timetable of four issues per year was generally maintained throughout Erik Routley's editorship, but there were occasional gaps or double issues, as may be seen in the table.
