 Fantasy Films 101.11 1989's "Erik the Viking" | Gamegrene.com
Erik, being the nice guy that he is, tries to leave the woman be, but it's all for naught, since a pair of Vikings burst in and try to have their way with her.
What Erik believes in is the Horn Resounding, and so he and his crew blow the horn twice, sailing over the edge of the world, landing in Asgaard, and waking the Gods.
But with Erik the Viking, as well as with all the other fantasy films I've covered, there's also quite a lot more going on, and the true storytellers among you must be aware of the larger issues at play here.

CM Magazine: Erik the Viking Sheep
In his imagination, Erik becomes the Viking Sheep, who, dressed in a cloak and helmet and carrying a sword and a shield, leads a shipload of Viking sheep on raids, terrorizing the inhabitants of coastal villages.
At last Erik is released into the flock where he proceeds to bore the other sheep with his Viking stories until, eventually, the sheep avoid him completely.
Erik happily obliges but also makes up other kinds of stories as well, eventually becoming the best storyteller in the flock and gaining many friends in the process.

Erik consults the wise-woman Freya, and learns that he must set sail to find the island of Hy-Brasil, where lies the "Horn Resounding," whose sound will awaken the gods of Valhalla and bring an end to Ragnarok and this age of violent strife.
To their shock, the vikings learn that weapons of any kind are banned on Hy-Brasil, for it is believed that the island will sink beneath the sea if ever blood is spilled upon it.
Erik the Viking offers a good story line overall (and reportedly began life as a bedtime story Jones told to his son), but the plot is continuously stalled by the script's comedic attempts, few of which prompt any laughter.

There is a scene, for example, in which Vikings attack and pillage a village, and Erik the Viking (Tim Robbins) finds himself required to assault one of the townswomen.
It's Mickey Rooney!") "Erik the Viking" was written and directed by Terry Jones, whose previous film, "Personal Services," was a splendid and intelligent slice-of-life about a notorious London madam who ran a genteel brothel for elderly gents.
I assume "Erik the Viking" represents some kind of comprehensive lack of judgment on Jones's part, and that he will be back among the competent in no time at all.

 Erik the Viking
Erik (Tim Robbins) has no moral dilemmas about raiding, killing and pillaging, but he balks at raping a young woman he finds hiding in a cottage in a devastated village.
Erik's village, led by his grandfather (a grizzled Mickey Rooney), is content with its endless cycle of raiding, fighting and debauchery until Erik challenges the young men to join his quest to find Asgard and entreat the gods to help mankind.
Backing him is a stout crew of Vikings, a grandly comical ensemble, including notables such as Tim McInnerny as Sven the Berserk, Charles McKeown as Sven's nagging father, Richard Ridings as the fearless Thorfinn Skullsplitter, Gordon Sinclair as the cowardly Ivar the Boneless, and Danny Schiller as the aptly named Snorri the Miserable.

erik the viking - review at videovista
At its release in 1989, Erik The Viking seemed destined for success; it boasted a decent budget, a strong transatlantic cast and the writing and direction of Terry Jones, a former Python, and history buff who, as that time, was riding high after the moderate success of his first solo directorial gig Personal Services.
However, for all of the director's erudition, Erik The Viking is eager to play fast and loose with the source material by both taking an axe to it, when the plot demands it, and displaying the same ambivalence towards his protagonists as he does in his previous film Personal Services.
Erik The Viking's failure was caused by Terry Jones' inability to successfully make the transition from comedy to drama, by finding a way to write jokes without undermining his characters.

 'Erik the Viking'
Erik the Viking," a Wagnerian slapstick fantasy, has the feel of a grown-up bedtime comedy, a gross, sillier "Princess Bride." Writer-director Terry Jones did, in fact, base this bit of swords and sorcery on stories he invented for his 7-year-old son that bear the unmistakable style of the Monty Python crowd.
After vomiting all over himself, a seasick Viking is comforted by a fellow sailor: "Many of the courageous sailors were pukers.
Haunted by the girl and weary of war, Erik seeks guidance from a wizard (Eartha Kitt) who advises him to journey to the peaceful island of Hy-Brasil, where he must find and blow the Horn Resounding, wake the gods and thereby end the Great Winter that has settled over the world.

 Erik the Viking (1989)
Erik the Viking is vaguely based on a story which Terry Jones wrote initially for his young son and later published as a children's book.
He originally planned to film the stories in that book, which contained some elements that can be seen in the final story, however he ended up writing a new story and tried to make a film which would appeal to adults and children, although I think this is really a film for teens and adults.
The story follows the adventures of a young Viking, Erik (Tim Robbins), who is disillusioned with the Viking lifestyle, especially after accidentally killing a young woman in one of the villages which his crew pillage.

I love the bone-headed maschismo of the Vikings, especially Sven and his dad.
