Erin Pizzey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Erin Pizzey (born February 19, 1939 in China, daughter of a diplomat) became internationally famous for having started one of the first Women's Refuges (called women's shelters in the US) in the modern world in 1971.
Erin Pizzey parted company with the movement owing to a difference of opinion regarding its underlying philosophy.
Many, including Pizzey herself, have claimed that Pizzey founded the modern women's shelter movement, that her Women's Refuge was the first in the modern world, or both.

ERIN: I want you to talk to an Irish lady who was in yesterday evening, because she told me about a man, nothing like as bad as yours, but she's just been in hospital because he put beer bottles up inside her.
ERIN: Well we do know that several judges thought he was so dangerous, he had to be kept on remand for eight months.

Erin Pizzey, crusader for battered women, by Brian Deer
Pizzey, now 47 and more or less in exile, sprawls uneasily in a low wooden armchair on the porch of her New Mexico home, one leg propped up on a pine coffee table.
Pizzey is of course famous for her work with battered wives in the early 1970s.
When Pizzey left Britain to write novels four years ago, it had become clear that the self-confident determination that leads Pizzey to take such actions was increasingly directed at those who should have been her friends.

Erin was preaching that some women are prone to violence, that they hungered for it, and that they agitated their spouses for the thrill of it.
Erin asserts that women with severe violent tendencies are not getting the proper help and treatment they desperately need, that by not taking responsibility and accountability for their actions the shelters are putting children and men at risk from further abuse as well as the women themselves and thereby not breaking the cycle of violence.
Erin Pizzey is the very first woman to open a modern shelter for women, and she has received nothing but ill repute from her adversaries.

Erin Pizzey: The Backlash! December 1997
Erin Pizzey was the founder of a women's shelter in Chiswick, England, the first modern battered women's shelter in the world.
She found that of the first 100 women who came to her shelter, 62 were as or more violent than the partners they tried to escape from -- only to return to their partners time and again because of their addiction to pain and violence, violence that they persistently did their best to bring about.
Over a period of ten years, Erin Pizzey became involved with about 5,000 women and their children who came through her shelter.
