The effect of Eriobotrya japonica seed extract on oxidative stress in adriamycin-induced nephropathy in rats
Eriobotrya japonica has been used as a medicinal plant for a long time, and its leaves are known to have many physiological actions such as anti-inflammatory, antitussive, and expectoran.
In this study, we prepared a 70% ethanol extract of Eriobotrya japonica seeds and administered the extract to rats with renal disorder induced by a single administration of 7 mg/kg body weight adriamycin, and investigated the usefulness of the extract.
Therefore, ingestion of Eriobotrya japonica seed extract may contribute to a reduction of the adverse effects of adriamycin.

A method according to claim 8, wherein the extract of Eriobotrya japonica is present at a concentration between 0.3 μg/ml and 30 μg/ml of the culture medium.
It has now been discovered that extracts of the Eriobotrya japonica plant are of great value in cosmetics and pharmacy, especially in dermatology, by virtue of their property of stimulating the production of glycosaminoglycans by the fibroblasts and the keratinocytes, and particularly the fibroblasts of the dermis, especially of the human dermis, and human keratinocytes.
Thus, according to one of its essential characteristics, the invention relates to the use of an extract of the Eriobotrya japonica plant as a cosmetic agent for stimulating the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) by the skin cells, particularly by the fibroblasts and/or the keratinocytes, said cosmetic agent being incorporated in a cosmetically acceptable vehicle.

In English these are most commonly known as "loquats", which is mercifully less of a mouthful than "Eriobotrya".
Other names I found include "Japanese medlar" and "Japanese plum", but "plum" in particular is usually used for ume, which in turn can also be called "Japanese apricot", which is odd, since I'd say that the biwa is much more similar to an apricot than ume.
