Eriskay, South Uist, Benbecula and Barra were purchased by a Colonel Gordon of Cluny.
Eriskay has a more recent claim to fame because of the story of the SS Politician, which struck rocks just off the north shore of the island on 5 February 1941.
Eriskay is now much more accessible from South Uist than in the days of the ferry; and services in South Uist and Benbecula are more readily available to Eriskay residents.

Eriskay is about three miles long and 1.5 miles wide, and the island is quite hilly, rising to 610 feet, although there is plenty of fertile land.
The island is reached by a vehicle ferry from Ludag on South Uist (Eriskay Car Ferry tel: 01878 720261) and passenger ferry from Ludag on South Uist and Eoligarry on Barra (Sound of Barra Ferry - tel: 01878 720265 between 9.00-13.00 and 01878 720238 after 14.00).
It was on Eriskay that Bonnie Prince Charlie first landed on 23 July 1745, during the Jacobite Rising of 1745-6, but he was disappointed with the lack of support, and quickly left for the mainland.

The ensuing unofficial salvage operation by the Eriskay men in their small boats and the imaginative dodges emplyed to evade the droves of customs officers despatched from the mainland inspired a hilarious comedy film, "Whisky Galore".

On Eriskay there is a local shop and Post Office, and also a pub called A.M. Politician, named after the famous ship which sank in February 1941, full of whisky; the film was called whisky galore.
The two main heights on Eriskay are Ben Scrien at 609ft and Ben Stack at 403 ft. It is on Ben Scrien in particular that you will find the Eriskay ponies, a class of great antiquity.
Eriskay also has wonderful sandy beaches and glorious views from the self catering apartments.

The inhabitants of Eriskay, which is a small bare island in the Sound of Barra, about four miles long and two broad, were fishermen, descended from evicted inhabitants of Hellisay and South Uist.
The Eriskay fishermen themselves offered to devote the proceeds of one night's fishing towards the cost of the church, and after fervent prayer caught a record catch, worth nearly £200,*2 no small sum in those times.
He exerted his influence, successfully, to keep the Eriskay fishermen from getting into debt, with the result that the fishing there was put on a sound financial footing and survived the crisis of the First World War, which was not the case in every Highland community.
