	Thamesmead
		Uniquely, although Thamesmead was a ‘new town’ and built on the scale of the early post-war towns, it was a new town built within a capital city.
		It may seem hard to believe it today, but when Thamesmead was being built and even long after the first families had arrived, coach loads of professional visitors would descend on the area to consider the architectural and sociological aspects of the development.
		Thamesmead was developed and managed by the Greater London Council up until the abolition of the GLC in 1986.

		After the land was vacated by the military the Greater London Council developed Thamesmead in fits and starts from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s.
		Thamesmead Central offers the majority of the town’s retail facilities – but these are woefully inadequate for a settlement of such proportions.
		Thamesmead North was the last of the municipally built zones, while Thamesmead West has recently seen private development on a major scale.

		The Ridgeway Walk leads off here, to return beyond Thamesmead, and a little further on is the start of Section 1 of the Green Chain Walk.
		Beyond that, the riverside is not yet accessible and you must divert inland, shortly joining Section 5 of the Green Chain Walk to reach the Thames Barrier and the east end of the Thames Path National Trail.
		The whole route is level and firm, but some fairly long stretches at Thamesmead are on uneven ground.
