ASMARA, 24 Mar 2003 (IRIN) - The maiden flight of the newly-launched Eritrean Airlines is due to depart from Asmara on 15 April, bound for Frankfurt in Germany.
Eritrean Airlines is a government-financed endeavour established in May 1991.
By the end of the year, officials at Eritrean Airlines say they hope to be running eight flights a week to Europe and at least six flights a week to destinations in the Middle East and Africa.

Eritrean Airlines is an airline based in Asmara in Eritrea.
The airline was established in 1991, but in name only, serving as the ground handling agent at Asmara International Airport and at Assab and Massawa and sales agent for other major airlines flying to Eritrea.
Eritrean Airlines took delivery of their first aircraft, a leased Boeing 767-300ER, in April 2003 and started services from Asmara to Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Milan, Nairobi and Rome.

He also argues that the airline industry is suffering and the launching of a new small airline would be financially irresponsible at this time.
In addition, all the new successful discount airlines are subsidiaries of existing (and faultering) airlines, so they didn't have huge start-up expenses (most of which, by the way, were absorbed by the parent company).
