Erkenbrand was one of the most trusted allies of the King of the Rohirrim, Theoden.
Lord Erkenbrand is the true savoir of Helm's Deep, he and his company are the real people that appeared with Mithrandir to the rescue of Théoden King at Helm's Deep, after regrouping his company at The Second Battle of the Fords of Isen.
Erkenbrand was a strong figure, chief lord, and leader of the Westfold and Hornburg (later a Marshall of the Mark), a high and noble warrior willing to defend the country at any means, noted and recognised by the people of the country, regarded as highly as Éomer was.

At the time of the War of the Ring, Erkenbrand had retired from service to Théoden, but returned after the death of Théoden's son Théodred to command the forces of Rohan in its western regions.
He later played a critical role in the Battle of the Hornburg when he and Gandalf lead an army of a thousand riders to reinforce the besieged forces of Rohan.

After being released from Gríma Wormtongue's influence by Gandalf, Théoden set out to the Fords of Isen, where Erkenbrand was fighting Saruman's forces.
However, he found out that they had been scattered, and Gandalf advised him to take refuge in the Hornburg, where many of the folk of the Westfold were staying.
In the original text, Gandalf returns with infantry led by Erkenbrand, whereas in the film they are cavalry led by Éomer (a change already made by Bakshi in his version).

The Battles of the Fords of Isen
Nevertheless, a strategy utilizing the fords of Isen was resolved upon: and Théodred came to join his cavalry to the Westfold infantry levy who were holding the fords of Isen, under the command of the marshal Grimbold.
The rest of the Isengard army on the east side of the river came down from the north and attacked Grimbold’s camp: first orcs, then Dunlendings, who were larger and more up to the work, although not so well armed nor trained as the Rohirrim warriors.
Erkenbrand was lord of Helm’s Deep and the Westfold: it seems that Grimbold was his marshal; for he held the rank of marshal in that part of the realm, without being marshal of the west-mark, which was Théodred’s title.

 The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum - Where's Erkenbrand?
So the picture is that at first Erkenbrand was at the Hornburg, and then, at the time of the second Battle, he was south of the Fords, gathering troops and preparing.
It is recorded that after Théoden’s funeral, when Éomer reordered his realm, Erkenbrand was made Marshal of the West-mark, and Elfhelm Marshal of the East-mark, and these titles were maintained, instead of Second and Third Marshal, neither having precedence over the other.
I tend to agree with you (after detailed re-reading) that Erkenbrand wasn't at either of the battles of the fords of the Isen.

Gandalf led Erkenbrand's infantry to break the siege of Helm's Deep, and himself on Shadowfax drove many of the orcs beneath the shadow of the Huorns, the dark ents, which had traveled to avenge the death of trees by orcs.
