Topic: Erlanger Theatre

A.L. Erlanger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Abraham Lincoln Erlanger (May 4, 1859 – March 7, 1930) was an American theatrical producer, director, designer, theatre owner, and a leading figure of the Theatrical Syndicate.
Their organization known as "Klaw and Erlanger" established systemized booking networks throughout the United States and created a monopoly that controlled every aspect of contracts and bookings until the late 1910s when the Shubert brothers broke their stranglehold on the industry.
The operations of Klaw and Erlanger produced dozens of Broadway shows during the first three decades of the 20th century, including "Dracula," "Ben-Hur," and "The Jazz Singer." They were responsible for opening the rooftop "Jardin de Paris" where the first Ziegfeld Follies was staged.

 History of Philadelphia's Forrest Theatre
The Forrest is a quintessential "road house", stripped to the bare walls and used primarily by touring theatre and dance companies.
But, after Fidelity decided to demolish the old Forrest, Erlanger joined forces with the Stanley Theatre Co. of Philadelphia to build a new playhouse at Market and 21st Streets from which the Shuberts would be excluded.
The last complete renovation of the house took place in 1997 when extensive redecoration as well as barrier removals and accessibly improvements were made including the addition of a handicapped accessible bathroom. The lobbies were redone in the early 1990s by famous theatrical scenic designer Oliver Smith.

Among the elements of the theatre design that were intentionally not restored to the original 1926 blueprint was the wall between the lobby and auditorium.

After the hotel was constructed, the theater was leased to Buffalo born Abraham Lincoln Erlanger (1860-1930) who gave his name to the theater.
Erlanger's heartlessness eventually opened the way to his own destruction.
When theater owner Sam Shubert died in a train wreck, Erlanger refused to abide by any legal agreements "with a dead man." Sam's outraged brothers Lee and Jacob swore vengeance, and over the next few decades battled the Syndicate into virtual extinction.

The Erlanger Theater was built as a self-monument (on the site of the original Sardi's restaurant) to producer-impressario-entrepeneur Abraham Erlanger who's fortunes waxed then waned with that of the Theatrical Syndicate in which he was a main player.
Upon Erlanger's death in 1930, control of the theater was assumed by the Astor descendants (who still owned the land underneath the Erlanger and most other theaters west of Broadway), and the name was changed to the St James
Given some years of data we were unable to find, it is possible that the St James was not in legitimate use from Erlanger's death in 1930 until the Shubert purchase in (?1937?), which would be consistent with that of many other Broadway houses.
