The essence is that Halfrid and Erling were too close as kin to be married, but loved one another; Erling did not defy custom, but gave her up to a husband who eventually abused her (which was her first husband, before she was ever married to Simon).
In the Archer translation, the discussion of the unfitness of the young king Magnus to rule, leaves out the suspicion that he is a homosexual, which makes the entire discussion meaningless.
I think two very telling scenes that exemplify this are when Simon points out to Kristin her father's qualities as a Chieftain and a little later when Erling and others discuss politics with Lavrans.
