Topic: Ermin Street

Ermine Street - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ermine Street should not be confused with Ermin Street, the road from Silchester to Gloucester.
Ermine Street was the Anglo-Saxon name of a road in England that ran from London to Lincoln (Lindum) and York (Eboracum).
Ermine Street and The River Trent together, were evidently an important early route of entry into early post-Roman Britain.

 Medieval Route
There is no trace on the map at first but the supposed route stays on the high ground, while Ermine Street, turning northward at Alconbury Hill descends Stanegate Hill from almost 50 metres to 10 metres at Sawtry.
The road, which forms the parish boundary between Steeple Gidding and Sawtry, passes Coldharbour Farm, a name that Hindle tells us is often associated with Roman roads, perhaps referring to a roadside shelter.
As we have seen, the Romans chose a low-lying route for Ermine Street between Sawtry and the River Nene.

The most famous Ermine Street isn't anything to do with our Ermin Street, except for the fact that they are both Roman roads.
It has the classic Roman characteristic of being a perfectly straight line (which can be followed straight to the Roman town of Cirencester 16 miles North and south through Wanborough and Fox Hill).
Until about 20 years ago, Ermin Street was still a busy main road - being the main route north to Cirencester and the Midlands.

In Roman times Cricklade lay on Ermin Street, although it had been on the trackways between the territories of early tribes long before that.
The labourers look very poor; dwellings little better than pigbeds and their food nearly equal to that of a pig.” The muddy, smelly, streets Cricklade would have exhibited in 1821 may well have clouded his view, but in fact today a passer-by would gain a wholly different impression of the town.
Another notable feature of the High Street is the cast-iron clock on the junction of the High Street and Calcutt Street, which was paid for by public subscription in order to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
