Smith was born in New Westminster, B.C., just weeks before the onset of the First World War, but it is for his brave actions during WWII for which he is known.
Smith had already been wounded once in Sicily, when he returned to cross the Savio River with his regiment, the Seaforth Highlanders, the spearhead of an attack aimed at establishing a bridgehead in the push to liberate Cesena and ultimately break through the Germans' Gothic Line.
Smith was armed with two machine guns, an anti-tank gun and hundreds of rounds of machine-gun ammunition strung around his neck and hanging off his body.

On the night of October 21 1944, Private Ernest Alvia "Smokey" Smith, who has died aged 91, was serving with one of the two companies of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada which crossed the Savio river, in northern Italy, and seized a narrow bridgehead.
Smith, armed with a PIAT anti-tank weapon, and some distance away, gathered up his team, crossed an open field and took up a position with a colleague in a ditch alongside the road on which the tanks were advancing.
Smith, one of two sons of a teamster father, was born in New Westminster, British Columbia.
