PERCY GARDNER (1846-), English classical archaeologist, was born in London, and was educated at the City of London school and Christ's College, Cambridge (fellow, 1872).
He was Disney professor of archaeology at Cambridge from 1880 to 1887, and was then appointed professor of classical archaeology at Oxford, where he had a stimulating influence on the study of ancient, and particularly Greek, art.
His brother, Ernest Arthur Gardner (1862-), educated at the City of London school and Caius College, Cambridge (fellow, 1885), is also well known as an archaeologist.

Arthur Pope and Phyllis Ackerman - lived in the house nicknamed scholar's cottage from 1924 to 1943.
Designed in 1895 by ernest Coxhead for one Alonzo McFarland, the house is an early example of the Beaux Arts style which would sweep the city after the turn of the century (Alexander and Heig 2002: 352).

In 1887 Frank W. Smith began manufacturing silverware in Gardner and within a few years the Frank W. Smith Silver Company had one of the finest equipped factories in the country for the manufacture of high grade sterling silverware, both by machine and by hand.
Arthur Stone remained in business for thirty-six years, during which time he became known as “The Dean of American Silversmiths.” His works included hand wrought silver products such as toys, bowls, trophies, tankards, tea sets, table silver in all forms, altar sets for churches and often ecclesiastical pieces.
This demonstration is done by Peter Erickson, the grandson of one of Arthur Stone’s master craftsmen and the last to ply silversmithing in the city.

Ernest Gates was a letter carrier, but his primary interest and avocation was "whaling." He was Curator of the "Museum" of the Jibboom Club No. 1 in New London, a social organization begun in the 1870's by local whaling captains, that had been reorganized in 1891.

The entry on Praxiteles (a Greek sculptor), on page 324, written by Ernest Arthur Gardner in the Larousse encyclopedia of prehistoric and ancient art; art and mankind.
It was published by Prometheus Press of New York in 1962.

But then if you BELIEVE in him, there is not enough original material in the Watson memoirs by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (who unlike many recipients of this honor actually deserved a knighthood -- he was really an admirable person, although he got taken in by fake fairy pictures) to assuage your hunger.
