The Fumble - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While Byner took a lot of heat from Browns fans and the media for his fumble, what is often overlooked is that he was one of the main reasons Cleveland came so close to winning the game.
Byner took possession of the football from Kosar around the 10-yard-line, passed the line of scrimmage at the 8-yard-line, then saw an opening to the endzone to his right.
In his five seasons with Washington, Byner was selected to play in the Pro Bowl twice (1990, 1991) and won a Super Bowl ring with the team in the 1991 season.

Byner only played three years in Baltimore and they were the last three years of a career that wasn't so impressive in the first place.
Granted, Byner was not a life-long Cleveland Brown—he played for the Redskins too (another fact which alienates him from being a purely Baltimore guy)—but he had some of his best seasons with the Browns.
Ernest Byner was the Browns running back then and Elway broke his Browns' heart.

A Day In The Life: CHEAPENING THE RING OF HONOR
The first inductee should be the standard – the standard of excellence, it should be to recognize something of distinction and that placard is a symbol of such distinction.
Ask folks around the league and Byner is generally remembered for two things: 1) A big fumble at the goal line in a playoff match against Denver as a member of the Browns; or 2) As a Washington Redskin.
Maybe he might like to be remembered as a good guy who did the right thing and got the Ravens off the hook with that misplaced placard instead of being remembered as the “Who?” guy years from now when future generations look up and see his name.

I'm probably wrong, as well, in remembering the play with Byner crossing the goal line — he may have been a yard or so shy — but nevertheless, that fumble engendered an extreme sense of relief for me and, I'm sure, all Bronco fans.

CLEVELAND — In years past, such as the back-to-back AFC Championship Games from 1987-88, this matchup between the Denver Broncos and the Cleveland Browns would have been an epic battle.
And, of course, the fumble (with apologies to Ernest Byner).
Sunday, however, it was but a simple regular-season game between teams going in different directions, with the Broncos headed up — although perhaps not as artfully as their fans would prefer — and the Browns headed nowhere.
