Chausson himself had conducted it at concerts of the Société Nationale de Musique in 1891 and 1892, but the Société was perceived as a new-music organization of rather parochial concerns, and what weighed more was that the two official eminences of the French orchestral world, Charles Lamoureux and Edouard Colonne, ignored Chausson's work.
The well-named Prosper Chausson insisted that his son equip himself for a life of respectability and financial security; it was, therefore, not until he was twenty-four and had completed his law degree that Chausson enrolled at the Paris Conservatory to study composition with Jules Massenet and César Franck.
Chausson's preference is to use the English horn as an exotic coloration added to another instrument—flute near the end of the first movement, and now a solo cello.

Ernest Amédée Chausson was born in Paris on January 21, 1855.
Well-to-do and generous, Chausson did much to promote contemporary music in France, serving for ten years as secretary of the Société Nationale de Musique, as well as supporting financially such younger composers as Debussy and Albéniz.
Chausson worked on Le roi Arthus for a decade, completing the work in 1895, but did not live to hear it performed, his career cut tragically short by a cycling accident on June 10, 1899 in Limay.
