  Immanuel's Architecture
The creation of Ernest Flagg (one of American's foremost architects at the turn of the twentieth century), this light-filled space, with its overarching dome and Tiffany mosaic depicting one of Jesus' best known stories — the parable of the sower — manages to convey both grandeur and simplicity.
Flagg was the son of a man who was a minister by vocation and an artist by avocation.
The influence of England was waning, and Flagg was to ride the crest of the new wave.

New York Architecture Images- Singer Building
In the 1890's, Flagg had denounced the growing crop of skyscrapers, and by the turn of the 20th century he was horrified by the darkened streets and raw side walls produced by such buildings.
Begun in 1906, the Singer Building incorporated Flagg's model for "a city of towers," with the 1896 structure reconstructed as the base, and a 65-foot-square shaft rising 612 feet high, culminating in a bulbous mansard and giant lantern at the peak.
Flagg reused the earlier building's French-style color scheme of bright red brick and light stone and terra cotta, framing a broad, iron-framed bay of windows rising most of the height of the tower.

A New York architect by the name of Ernest Flagg was commissioned to submit a design in the Gothic and Renaissance styles in 1895.

NEW YORK SCRAPERS - EARLY CENTURY II
Flagg, who had also designed the previous, cast-iron, Art Nouveau style Singer Loft Building (built between 1902-1904) at 561 Broadway in SoHo, called the old building "Little Singer" to distinguish it from the new, expanded premises.
As early as in 1898 Flagg had suggested that only the lower parts of a tall building should be allowed to occupy the area of the whole plot, and that the tower should be restricted to one quarter of the plot area.
With this building Flagg preceded the 1916 zoning regulations; its 47-storey slender tower rose from the top of the large building block below, allowing more sunlight to reach the street.

Ernest Flagg studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts and was one of the few Americans who returned from Paris with an interest in and understanding of French architectural theory.
Flagg's practice was limited, in part by his obnoxious personality, but he had a few loyal clients (including several relatives) and designed some of the most important residential, institutional, and commercial buildings at the turn of the twentieth century in New York.
Flagg was also involved in tenement reform and designed a series of model apartment houses and single-family dwellings.

Flagg, the author notes, combined French nineteenth century aesthetics and the principles of academic classicism with American structural technology to create significant buildings during the Progressive Era from 1890 to 1917.
Flagg's adaptation of classicism and his concern for urban contextualism make this study of his work particularly timely.
