Nichols served as a professor of physics at Colgate University from 1892-1898, at Dartmouth College from 1898-1903, and Columbia University from 1903-1909.
Thereafter, Nichols served as the 10th President of Dartmouth College between 1909 and 1916, and as the president of MIT from 1921 until 1923.

Fox enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army in 1898 at the start of the Spanish-American War, and so distinguished himself in the Philippines that when he left the Army in 1899, he was a second lieutenant.
Fox remained in the Army Reserve and at the time of his appointment as Director of the Adler Planetarium, he was a Colonel and served as the Commander of the 43rd Infantry of the 86th Division based at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.
Fox was concerned about the growth of the large cities and the brightening of the natural skies as a result of population increase.

He was too ill from heart disease during his brief tenure to enter actively into his responsibilities.
Nichols was a professor of physics at Colgate College (1892-1898), Dartmouth College (1898-1903), Yale University (1916), and Columbia University (1903-1916).

Fox thus came to the directorship of the Dearborn Observatory, his most important astronomical position, a man of wide training and experience, and he threw himself enthusiastically into work with its 18 1/2-inch refractor.
Happily married (his widow and four children, three sons and a daughter, survive him), located in a congenial university community, surrounded by scores of friends, artists, musicians, and scientists, and equipped with a telescope with which, as he so fully demonstrated, useful contributions to knowledge could be made, his situation was well-nigh ideal.
As for Fox himself, though for a brief period he was technically “out of work,” he found plenty to do to occupy his mind and hands with astronomical research, music, art, and the activities of the Officers’ Reserve Corps.
