The economiser, known commercially as either the Godward Gas Generator or the Eclipse Petrol Economiser, was a generator placed between the carburettor and engine to produce a perfect petrol gas which did not condense, unlike the usual atomised spray.
Godward expanded his cycle business to include the importation of Reo cars, and his economisers worked as well in cars as they did in motorcycles.
Godward is admired not only for his inventions; he had an acute business instinct, artistic talent and phenomenal sporting ability.

Ernest Robert Godward was born in London, England, on 7 April 1869, the son of Henry Robert Godward, a fireman, and his wife, Sarah Ann Pattison.
In 1926 the Godward Vaporiser was successfully trialled by the United States Army for use in trucks; and in 1929 his economiser, reputed to increase horsepower by 15 per cent, was installed in about 580 buses in Philadelphia.
Ernest Godward was returning to New Zealand on the Mongolia when he died on 2 December 1936 in the western Mediterranean.

 Ernest Godward Information
Ernest Godward was born in Marylebone, London on April 7, 1869.
From 1903-1906 Godward served on the Invercargill Borough Council, built an impressive new house, painted portraits and landscapes, played a variety of musical instruments and sang in local musical productions.
Godward died in 1936 on board the SS Mongolia returning home to Invercargill.
