Kaai states..."The UKULELE is therefore not an invention but rather a creation." I love it.
When he first observed my behavior with the Kaai booklet he spoke to me. I understood his view, but I explained that it was important to me, emotionally and spiritually, that I wear the book out during my life time.
Kaai's 1916 method is probably the most remarkable of all the early primers.

 Harp Ukuleles by Gregg Miner
Knutsen must have met the uke virtuoso Kaai in 1909, when the latter was engaged to coordinate the Hawaiian music at the AYP Expo.
There is simply no way to know, nor if the instrument containing this label was thus one of the first built, or part of a later business arrangement.
In July, 2005, a new Knutsen design of harp mandolin was discovered with almost certainly a pre-1910 label, so the theory that Knutsen only built harp mandolins and harp ukes after 1910 may not be strictly true.

In the mid ‘40s, when Dick McIntire’s health problems forced him to leave the Harmony Hawaiians and move to the drier climate of Arizona, the multi-talented Eddie Bush took over the all-important steel guitar chair.
Later, Bernie Kaai, then Ernest and Freddie Tavares, fulfilled the same role.
Among these various mid-'40s configurations of the Harmony Hawaiians, the voices of Eddie Bush, Danny Kuaana, Gary Speare and Mel Peterson are readily recognisable, and here, in this first set drawn from the forty or so tracks they recorded for Standard Radio Transcriptions, Bernie Kaai makes a number of valuable contributions.

There are three distinct periods in the history of the acoustic Hawaiian steel guitar: the first began with the advent of the steel guitar in the late 1880s and continued until around 1915.
First-generation players such as Ernest Kaai, William Ellis, Keoki Awai, Frank Ferera and July Paka took the United States by storm, integrating ragtime and other music of the era into traditional Hawaiian music.
By 1916, more Hawaiian records were sold than any other type in the U.S. The resonator guitar, which provided more volume, was invented in the 1920s.
