Alfred Nicolas Rambaud - LoveToKnow 1911
He was one of that band of young scholars, among whom were also Ernest Lavisse, Gabriel Monod and Gaston Paris, whose enthusiasm was aroused by the principles and organization of scientific study as applied beyond the Rhine, and who were ready to devote themselves to their cherished plan of remodelling higher education in France.
The plan of this great work had been drawn up with the aid of Ernest Lavisse, but the entire supervision of its execution was carried out by Rambaud.

Equally powerful is the ghost of Ernest Lavisse, the Third Republic historian whose self-imposed mission was to teach French schoolchildren to love the motherland through the study of history and whose primary textbook, Le petit Lavisse, has been read by millions of those children.
Lavisse's conceptualization of the French national community withstood waves of immigration from other parts of Europe (which, as Gérard Noiriel points out in "French and Foreigners," rivaled those experienced by the United States during the same period).
Lavisse's 27-volume Histoire de la France, covering the period up to the revolution, was published between 1900 and 1911; it was augmented by the 9-volume Histoire de la France contemporaine (Paris, 1920–22).

According to Lavisse and his team, "unity" figures among the essential, "indestructible" characteristics of France (Histoire de France contemporaine depuis la Révolution, vol.
First grounded in "nature" (physical obstacles in France can easily be overcome or rounded), it also results from a political will; initially imposed by the monarchy, it has been "wanted by the nation" since the years 1789-1790 (510).

What Bryce was talking about a century ago was a world which for the first time was becoming a single entity in the human as well as the physical sense, and to which the term cosmos could appropriately be applied.
It resembles less the geopolitical world map on which Lavisse's "pale lines" have been drawn, responsive to the considerations of power rather than to the human realities beneath them, than those scientific maps in which the political tints give way to the actual features of a holistic geographical space.

I then consider a text written in the 1990s specifically to repudiate the kind of nationalist narratives that prevailed for most of this century-a new supranational history of Europe.
I argue that, in their different experiments with fixing history, both Lavisse and the contemporary textbook authors did not so much repair a deficient history as produce a historical fixation, creating mythicized histories that are complete, closed, predictable, and at bottom ahistorical.
Finally, I turn to a recent World War I novel, A Very Long Engagement by Sébastien Japrisot, in order to suggest ways in which the narrative strategies of a fiction writer may be useful to historians in thinking about a different kind of historical project.
