Ernest Thayer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ernest Lawrence Thayer (August 14, 1863 - August 21, 1940) was an American writer and poet who wrote "Casey at the Bat".
Thayer was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts and raised in Worcester.
Thayer's recitation of it at a Harvard class reunion in 1895 may seem trivial except that it helps solve the mystery, which lingered into the 20th century, of who had written it.

WHERE THE MIGHTY CASEY STRUCK OUT
The documentation is sketchy, but I can remember reading somewhere that Ernest Lawrence Thayer was watching a semi-pro baseball game in Stockton, CA in 1888 when the lines of "Casey at the Bat" began to form in his mind.
Ernest Lawrence Thayer was the son of a wealthy woolens manufacturer in Worcester, MA.
Thayer's poem had impressed the writer so much when he had read it in the Examiner that he had clipped and saved it.

 Casey at the Bat
Ernest Lawrence Thayer was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on August 14th, 1863.
Thayer, the son of a wealthy mill owner, was expected to go into the family business, and attended Harvard where he majored in philosophy and minored in humor.
Thayer himself would later declare that there was no “real” Casey, and that the name and vague image of Casey were drawn from a bully who once threatened to beat him up in high school.

[minstrels] Casey At The Bat -- Ernest Lawrence Thayer
For the full story behind the writing of the poem, see Biography and Appraisal: Born August 14, 1863 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Ernest Thayer was the son of a prosperous mill owner.
Thayer wrote his columns for the newspaper using the pseudonym "Phin" and it would be several years before the true authorship of "Casey" would be determined.
In his brief review of Thayer's life, Martin Gardner writes: One might argue that Thayer, with his extraordinary beginning at Harvard, his friendship with James and Santayana, his lifelong immersion in philosophy and the great books, was himself something of a Casey.

The Sporting News Archives - 100-year-old puzzle: Was there a real Casey?
Ernest Lawrence Thayer created "Casey" in a few hours, basically to fill space.
Thayer majored in philosophy under Henry James at Harvard, edited the "Lampoon," -- the business manager of which was one William Randolph Hearst, soon to become the Examiner’s publisher -- made Phi Beta Kappa and, after refusing a job in the family woolen mill in Masschusetts, drifted to Paris.
Thayer long contended the poem had no basis in fact.

The Mediadrome - Poetry - Poems of the Week: The American West
It was unusually hot, and Ernest Thayer took a seat by an open window in the San Francisco Examiner's crowded city room.
He had brought with him several friends from Harvard, including Thayer, who was enjoying the life of a Western journalist before returning home to run his own father's woolen mills in Worcester, Mass.
On the morning when he was to have his one brief contact with immortality, Thayer admitted that he was dull of mood and melancholy of spirit.

Although it made him famous, and Thayer recited it at a Harvard class reunion in 1895 and contributed several other comic poems for Hearst's New York Journal a year later, Thayer had a low opinion of the worth of his verse and turned to make his livelihood by overseeing his family's mills in Worcester.
