The comet was observed until July 29.89, when Ernest Leonard Johnson (Union Observatory, Johannesburg, South Africa) photographed it.
Johnson attempted to photograph the comet again on August 16 and 18, but was unsuccessful.
Johnson reexamined photos taken in 1927 and 1938 and noted the comet was much more diffuse in the latter year than in the former, with a condensation only noted on one occasion in 1938.

Not a private eye writer, per se, but many of Leonard protagonists fulfill most of the requirements, being loners trying to follow what they feel is a code of honour, be they bail bondsman, bounty hunters, airline stewardesses, or car thieves.
Leonard's one of those guys who wrote and wrote and wrote, for years and years and years, only to become an overnight success in the 1980's.
Probably, much of this comes from the conversational nature of his style and his use of dialogue, a bit from his "observer," viewpoint, and the rest from his attitude about his characters, their situation and the world in general.

He and Leonard extolled Viereck as a poetic genius and encouraged his neo-romantic inclinations.

I was told this was in Johnson County, but have been unable to locate it on a map.
The family were in 1900 Johnson Co.; 1910 Stephens Co.; and 1920 Thorckmorton Co. He was born in Sep 1855 and his wife Sarah was born in June 1859.
They moved to Johnson County in the early 1850's and were some of the first settlers of this county.
