  Ernest Reyer - LoveToKnow 1911
ERNEST REYER (1823-), French composer, was born at Marseilles on the 1st of December 1823.
Erostrate, an opera produced at BadenBaden in 1862, and given at the Paris Opera some ten years later, was a failure.
As a musical critic (preceding Berlioz in that capacity for the Journal des debats) Reyer was a well-known writer; and he became librarian of the Paris Opera, and a member of the Institute.

 ERNEST REYER : Encyclopedia Entry
Ernest Reyer (1823 1909) was the adopted name of French opera composer and music critic Louis Étienne Ernest Rey.
Reyer, unable to support himself on the proceeds from his operas, succeeded Hector Berlioz as music critic at the Journal des débats; he also worked as the librarian at the Paris Opera.
Other compositions by Reyer include a symphonic ode entitled Le Sélam for soprano, tenor, baritone, chorus and orchestra; a ballet entitled Sacuntala (also the title of a famous overture by Karl Goldmark and of an opera by Franco Alfano); and the operas Maître Wolfram, La Statue, and Erostrate.

On this sheet, the composer Ernest Reyer seems to have contributed two of the three portraits.
Reyer was a friend of Degas, and he appears himself in other drawings in this book.
Another carefully drawn head, probably also by Reyer, occupies the center, drawn when the sheet was vertical.

Reyer and the Washerwoman (Getty Museum)
Across two pages of his sketchbook, Edgar Degas drew the composer Ernest Reyer sitting at a long table among four washerwomen.
Reyer's intense gaze contrasts sharply with the studied indifference of the object of his attention.
There may be a sexual inference in Reyer's offer, especially since washerwomen in the 1800s often turned to prostitution to supplement their low incomes.

This version is virtually complete, and I recommend it over the reviewed version (the historical one) because one of the most important parts of Reyer's operatic writing was his use of the orchestra, which comes across quite poorly in the historical recording.
Though Reyer's opera does deal with some of the same characters, the events are not at all the same.
The greatest problem we have with this absolutely wonderful work (the music is ravishingly beautiful, and exceptionally wonderful to sing; no wonder all the great singers of that time loved singing in this opera) is we have a terrible habit of comparing it to Wagner, and often thinking it is an inferior work.
