Ernest Solvay is the third seated from the left.
Ernest Solvay (April 16, 1838 - May 26, 1922) was a Belgian chemist, industrialist and philanthropist.
The exploitation of his patents brought Solvay considerable wealth, which he used for philantropic purposes, including the establishment of the Institute for Sociology at the University of Brussels, as well as International Institutes for Physics and Chemistry.

His greatest achievement was the development in 1861 of the ammonia process for the manufacture of soda and its supply on a commercial basis.
In the Solvay process sodium chloride is treated with ammonia gas and then with carbon dioxide, resulting in the formation of sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3, and ammonium chloride.
The Solvay process replaced an earlier method, the Leblanc process, developed in 1775, and was itself replaced by the development of electro-chemical processes.

Solvay is one of the privileged partners of the "Einstein: Another View" exhibition which will be held in Brussels from the 15 December 2005 to the 1 May 2006, and which is part of the centenary celebration of the publication of Albert Einstein’s most pivotal works.
The ties between Ernest Solvay and Albert Einstein originated in 1911 when the industrialist invited the young scientist to participate in the first Solvay Physics Council in Brussels, attended by the greatest physicists of the time.

Ernest Solvay (1838-1922) was both a famous industrialist and a famous scientist.
Solvay's thinking meant that such a site would inevitably include the study of social phenomena and this led to a number of institutions being founded.
Realising that no university teaching was available for business, Solvay proposed to create a dedicated School of Commerce and as of 1903, he provided the necessary funding to ensure a complete university course, totally different from the traditional studies in economics.

The two formed Solvay Process Co. (in which the Solvays owned nearly half the stock) and built a plant at Syracuse, NY, where there were ample underground salt deposits and nearby limestone quarries.
Solvay Process and its affiliated Semet-Solvay Co., which designed, built, and operated byproduct coke ovens, became major parts of Allied Chemical and Dye Corp. when it was formed in 1920.
