Ernest Thayer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thayer was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts and raised in Worcester.
Thayer’s last piece, dated June 3, 1888, was a ballad entitled "Casey" ("Casey at the Bat").
Thayer's recitation of it at a Harvard class reunion in 1895 may seem trivial except that it helps solve the mystery, which lingered into the 20th century, of who had written it.

Review | Casey at the Bat by Ernest L. Thayer
Ernest L. Thayer's American classic poem "Casey at the Bat," as imagined by illustrator Joe Morse, is astonishing.
Let's face it, since Thayer penned the well known poem in 1888, there aren't a lot of people that don't have some recollections about the Mudville Nine leftover from childhood.
Generally, if illustrations accompanied Thayer's words, they were the kind of syrupy sweet illustrations delivered by Norman Rockwell and other illustrators of his school.

[minstrels] Casey At The Bat -- Ernest Lawrence Thayer
For the full story behind the writing of the poem, see Biography and Appraisal: Born August 14, 1863 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Ernest Thayer was the son of a prosperous mill owner.
Thayer wrote his columns for the newspaper using the pseudonym "Phin" and it would be several years before the true authorship of "Casey" would be determined.
In his brief review of Thayer's life, Martin Gardner writes: One might argue that Thayer, with his extraordinary beginning at Harvard, his friendship with James and Santayana, his lifelong immersion in philosophy and the great books, was himself something of a Casey.

 Casey at the Bat
Thayer, the son of a wealthy mill owner, was expected to go into the family business, and attended Harvard where he majored in philosophy and minored in humor.
Thayer began writing anonymously for the Examiner in 1886, and by 1887 he was contributing humorous poetry to the Sunday edition under the name Phin.
Thayer himself would later declare that there was no “real” Casey, and that the name and vague image of Casey were drawn from a bully who once threatened to beat him up in high school.

The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Mudville nine that day: The score stood four to two, with but one inning more to play, And then when Cooney died at first, and Barrows did the same, A pall-like silence fell upon the patrons of the game.
Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright; The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light, And somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout; But there is no joy in Mudville-- great Casey has struck out.

Ernest L. Thayer was one of William Randolph Hearst's Harvard Lampoon friends, brought to San Francisco by Hearst to help him with the San Francisco Examiner, the newspaper Hearst's father had given him.
Thayer wrote Casey and it was published in the June 3, 1888, edition, attracting little attention, though a writer named Archibald Gunter thought it interesting and kept a copy, later giving it to a friend of his, New York comedian De Wolf Hooper, as a possible amusing recitation.
