Rodrigues, it seems, is not only the owner, he's a client; as his name appears first in the listing of performers on each of these four CDs.
Rodrigues is again the focal point of the improvisations, his sonorous tones and short segments of mangled bowing set the tone for the others, with Chaparreiro sometimes almost inaudible.

VH1.com : Ernesto Rodrigues : Biography - Urge Music Downloads
The violinist Ernesto Rodrigues is a major improviser from Portugal on his own, but combined with his son Guilherme Rodrigues on cello he is part of one of a deeply expressive example of family bonding through creative music.
The senior Rodrigues started in the direction of free improvisation groups such as this when he came in contact with the type of avant garde classical scores that are often described as "indeterminate," meaning quite a few of the details of the actual performance are left up to interpretation and/or serendipity.
Rodrigues was also influenced by electronic music, like many improvisers on traditional instruments relishing the challenge of utilizing their axes to match, sound for sound, the noise coming out of plugged-in equipment.

Conceivably it's because of his location, off the beaten jazz track in Lisbon, but Portuguese violinist Ernesto Rodrigues and his associates are creating original, non-idiomatic music with few outside references.
Ideas are certainly distributed, as are musical parts, with Rodrigues playing an Evan Parker-influenced soprano saxophone as well as violin and viola and Oliveira strumming and picking an acoustic guitar, as well as working his percussive noise magic.
Rodrigues is back on violin and viola, Oliveira limits himself to percussion, while cellist Guilherme Rodrigues reappears, bringing along a pocket trumpet that is mostly unidentifiable and usually inaudible.

Ernesto Rodrigues : Contre-Plongée (Six Cuts for String Quartet) - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Not taking its instrumentation into account, this album lands squarely within Ernesto Rodrigues' average -- a demanding, intriguing, and fascinating studio session, but not as gripping or involving as his previous release, the wonderful Cesura.
This is not a string quartet in the traditional sense: there are two violins, one viola, and one cello, but Rodrigues plays both violin and viola.
The fourth player is José Oliveira, usually a percussionist in Rodrigues' projects, but here playing acoustic guitar (often prepared -- it sounds like a kalimba in the closing "Cut6") and occasionally scraping the strings of a nearby piano.

Its six pieces clock in at 46 minutes, and the eight-minute track duration is ideal for Rodrigues, whose good feel for structure was obscured by the extended sprawl of "Sudden Music"'s four tracks and squashed by the two-minute strictures of "Exposures".

Bagatellen: Ernesto Rodrigues - Assemblage e Ficta
Ernesto Rodrigues has been working with improvised music and modern forms of composition for over twenty years.
The common thread between the two discs is in the dynamics of the music: were the activity to be graphed in terms of collective pursuit and sonic amplitude, both might be represented as bell curves, from restrained to semi-raucous.
Gabriel Piauk’s piano on Ficta is critical in creating this sensation; his playing is quantifiable in terms of its function as mechanical counterpart, but fluctuates in and out of false signatures, an effect created by periodic, variable responses from the other instruments.

Sudden Music - Ernesto Rodrigues - Music Reviews
For his second CD on his own record label, violinist Ernesto Rodrigues chose to release a session that complements his debut, Multiples, while hinting at a different direction.
If John Stevens previously represented the main inspiration, this time around Rodrigues, percussionist José Oliveira, and guitarist António Chaparreiro turn their ears to the musicians associated with the lowercase, onkyo, and reductionist trends.
Rodrigues shifts between violin and viola, exploring the possibilities of slow bow movements while applying a lot of pressure on the strings.

The titles are teasingly cryptic, the cover-art spare and beautiful; the music itself is ultra-minimalist improv, of a kind that, even though it involves acoustic instruments rather than laptops and the like, will probably appeal more to followers of the electroacoustic improv scene than fans of “traditional” free improvisation.
MEANWHILE this is, by Ernesto's standards, an OLD CS release - nearly a dozen albums have appeared on the label since, including one of mine that nobody seems to have heard.

Jon Rose & Ernesto Rodrigues : UnAmerican Activities : One Final Note   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The Portuguese quartet is led by Ernesto Rodrigues on violin and viola, who has played with local flautist Carlos Bechegas and Italian saxist Gianni Gebbia among others, and who cites electronic music as an influence on his acoustic violin playing.
The Aussie trio is sparked by the extroverted soloing of British-Australian Jon Rose on violin and tenor violin.
Oliveira, who works frequently with Ernesto Rodrigues, may feature his guitar here, but the suspicion remains that some of the flailing flat picking and rasping come from one of the other strings or internal piano wires.

SIMF 2006 - Bios   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Ernesto Rodrigues and Manuel Mota may be standing on top of a very strong tradition in what concerns the relations between an arco string instrument and a guitar: the one introduced before the Second World War in improvisation by Stephane Grapelli and Django Reinhardt with the Quintet of the Hot Club de France.
The violist had classical training and went through free jazz before arriving to the non-idiomatic music he now embraces, and the guitarrist learned to pluck his ax by himself, moving his path from a minimalist-like drone work and re-discovered fingerstyle in the Delta blues based music.
This meeting of cultures could seem bizarre, but it’s so interiorized by both Ernesto Rodrigues and Manuel Mota that it’s not a matter of fusion or collage.

Ernesto Rodrigues (violin and viola), Guilherme Rodrigues (cello and pocket trumpet), and José Oliveira (percussion) -- the trio featured on the previously released Multiples -- are joined by pianist Gabriel Paiuk for a free improv session low on sounds per minute but very high on intensity.
Oliveira displays a lot of inventiveness, producing the most captivating (and pertinent) sounds out of a restrained selection of instruments, much like Günter Müller or Lê Quan Ninh.
The two Rodrigues scratch and wail quietly, but there is fire in their restraint.

It may seem a paradox, but in spite of their radical approach the music is 'unspectacular' at first hearing and wants to be good friends with silence.

Recorded by a trio consisting of Rodrigues on violin and viola, Michael Thieke on clarinet and alto clarinet, and Guilherme Rodrigues on cello and pocket trumpet, the three tracks in Prisma move from sparsely claustrophobic twittering percussive noises to hi-frequency drones and expansive breathing exercises to deceptively simple plucked strings and bowed notes.
Along the way, the structure of the tracks' musical events becomes denser, yet the sounds break free of their original condensed field to paint a broad acoustic landscape.
