Ernest Nevers (born June 11, 1902 in Willow River, Minnesota; died May 3, 1976) was an American football fullback who played for the Duluth Eskimos and the Chicago Cardinals of the National Football League.
Nevers attended Stanford University, where he was an All-American, and played in the 1925 Rose Bowl.
Nevers' grandson, Tom Nevers, was a first round draft pick by the Houston Astros baseball team in the 1990 draft.

Of all the records in the history of the National Football League, the one that has survived the longest was set on November 28, 1929, when Chicago Cardinals fullback Ernie Nevers, scored every one of his team’s points (six touchdowns and four extra point conversions) in a 40-6 rout of the Chicago Bears.
After he finished his Stanford career, Nevers signed pro basketball and baseball contracts and, in fact was destined to throw two homerun pitches to Babe Ruth in his historic 60-home run season in 1927.
Injuries forced Ernie to sit out the entire 1928 season, but he returned as the do-everything man for the Cardinals in 1929.

Stanford, Ernie and "Pop" lost that day (27-10), but Rockne was so impressed by that one performance he would later (when Nevers was playing as a pro with the Chicago Cardinals) take his Notre Dame players, at his own expense, to Chicago just to watch Ernie play.
Ernie's pitching wasn't all that great (4.64 ERA), and his.219 batting average (Bo Jackson managed.250 as an outfielder and DH!) were the main reasons he only played three years of pro-baseball.
Ernie Nevers is probably the only guy who will ever score ALL of his team's points in wins against other pro-football teams.

In the 1925 Rose Bowl against Knute Rockne's Notre Dame team which featured the famed Four Horsemen, Nevers never came off the field rushing 34 times for 114 yards on broken ankles that had just come out of casts 10 days earlier.

Ernie Nevers said Grayson was the best fullback he'd ever seen; the USC coach called him "a big, fast back who can run an end, hit a line, kick, pass, block and handle any assignment."

Former Stanford football John Ralston and former Stanford gridiron great Ernie Nevers were named to the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame and will be inducted during ceremonies on Nov. 7.
Nevers earned 11 athletic letters at Stanford in football, baseball, basketball and track.
Nevers, who died in 1976, was named the best college football player ever by Sports Illustrated in 1962.
