Ernie Watts is planning a live recording of his quartet this coming August, capturing 4 nights of music at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles August 22-25.
Ernie Watts is putting the final touches on his latest studio recording ANALOG MAN. Two catalog pieces "The Long Road Home" and "Spirit Song" are set for release through Burnside Distribution Corporation on March 14.
Ernie Watts Quartet is scheduled to appear at the Jazz Center in Istanbul, March 21-24.

Remembering the experience, Watts recalls Africa as "a timeless land." "It was amazing to play a government sponsored concert in the evening, then take a walk the next morning and see a camel caravan coming in from the desert, laden with giant salt blocks.
Watts' signature sound was heard on countless TV shows and movie scores, almost all the early West Coast Motown sessions, and with pop stars such as Aretha Franklin and Steely Dan.
Watts' tour with Metheny's group in the late 1980s found him on a triple bill with Sun Ra and the Miles Davis Band (on Davis' final tour), a turning point for the artist.

Actually, Watts' main hero has always been John Coltrane, and his later work reveals him to be an intense and masterful jazz improviser who has developed his own sheets-of-sound approach along with a distinctive and soulful sound.

Legendary tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts (of Tonight Show fame) gave an outstanding performance Saturday night along with an all-star rhythm section consisting of Christoph Saenger, piano; Rudi Engel, bass; and Heinrich Koebberling, drums.
The first set concluded with a Watts original “Angel’s Flight,” based largely upon the changes to “Cherokee.” This barnburner was performed at a breakneck tempo that was a wonder to behold.
