Ernie Wise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ernie Wise OBE (November 27, 1925 – March 21, 1999) was an English comedian, best known as one half of the comedy duo Morecambe and Wise, who became an institution on British television, especially for their Christmas specials.
Although Ernie was, strictly speaking, the "straight man" of the partnership, his role gradually and subtly changed over the years.
Ernie Wise died of a heart attack at Nuffield Hospital, Wexham, near Slough, Berkshire at the age of 73, following a series of heart problems over the years.

Morecambe and Wise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A typical Morecambe and Wise show, as scripted by Braben, was effectively a sketch show crossed with a sit-com, although shows could also include the duo appearing "as themselves" on a mock stage in front of curtains emblazoned with an M and W logo (this was usually to open the show).
Wise's contribution to the humour is a subject of an ongoing debate (to the end of his life he would always reject interviewers' suggestions that he was 'the straight man', preferring to call himself 'the song-and-dance man'); but as the manager of the duo he worked hard to ensure their success.
Morecambe and Wise would often pretend not to have heard of their guest, or would appear to confuse them with someone else (former UK Prime Minister Harold Wilson returned the favour, when appearing as a guest at the duo's 'flat', by referring to Morecambe as 'Mor-e-cam-by').

It's lasting popularity is demonstrated by how much of it is lodged in our memories: the Bring Me Sunshine theme tune; their introductions in front of the "stage" curtains; Ernie's period plays and the classic sketches (including the two of them "at home" and even sharing a bed!).
What brought it all together and made it such magic, was their partnership of opposites - the tall one with the specs always ready to ridicule the one with the "short, fat, hairy legs".

Quite often the problem with Morecambe and Wise "Greatest Hits" compilations is that they home in on the handful of sketches and routines, which are repeated to the point of nauseam--a dancing Angela Rippon, for example.
There are certainly a few such chestnuts here--Glenda Jackson in the play "what Ernie wrote", the breakfast striptease routine and "Singing In The Rain", though that particular classic can bear up to any number of repeated viewings.
There are seemingly inconsequential sketches of Eric and Ernie in their flat and even--Laurel and Hardy-style--in bed together in which their oddly intimate, bickering relationship is better explored than in some of the stagier items.
