Busch entered the German Army in 1904 and served on the Western Front during World War I.
After the war, Busch remained in the army and was appointed Inspector of Transport Troops in 1925.

Busch remained in the army and in 1925 was appointed Inspector of Transport Troops and in 1930 was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and placed in command of the 9th Infantry Regiment.
Busch took part in Operation Barbarossa and on September 8, 1941, his 16th Army took Demyansk before taking part in the siege of Leningrad.

Although he started out in a working-class family and began to make a living as a metalworker himself, Busch was clearly endowed with an outstanding voice and a great wit that excelled in creating the sharply etched humor of his lyrics.
Between 1935 and 1937, the third segment of Busch's career takes him to London and Moscow where his clever, biting lyrics attacking the fascist disease spreading through Europe are set opposite segments from Nazi propaganda documentaries.
Busch made an album at this time titled "Canciones de las Brigadas Internacionales," used as a musical backdrop for interviews with eyewitness accounts of the war, and with some historical footage and still shots of that time.

When: 11/19/2003 9:44:38 PM Ernst Busch wrote the song "Soldiers of the Moor" in 1933.
I think it is slightly humorous that the guards did not realize that the song was anti Nazi and sang it along side the prisoners.
I also think it was very brave of Busch to write something that could potentially get him shot.

A collector's item: recordings of Brecht/Eisler political songs from the Weimar years, sung by Ernst Busch, along with an early 50s recording by the Berliner Ensemble of the songs from Brecht's Die Mutter.
This CD offers probably the best available recording of the Brecht/Eisler Solidaritätslied (Solidarity Song): a recording by Ernst Busch late in the late 1960s, when his voice was still strong and modern recording techniques show off Eisler's jazz-band orchestration of this militant hit from the Roaring Twenties.
More recordings with Busch singing Eisler and other popular songs in the last years of the Weimar Republic and the early years of exile.

Other performers include some of the first names in German cabaret: Trude Hesterberg (founder of "Die Wilde Bühne"), Ernst Busch (Germany's greatest politically engaged singer), Blandine Ebinger (USA, 1937-1947)), Kate Kühl ("Lucy" in the premiere of Die Dreigroschen-oper, 1928), Margo Lion (one of the best German chanson parodists), and many others.
The songs I found less appealing were "protest songs" (to use an anachronistic phrase) expressing concern and outrage over long-past-and-to-me-unknown events.
The last song on the set is Brecht's "Der Marsch ins Dritte Reich," sung by Ernst Busch to a version of "It's a Long Way to Tipperary," arranged by Hanns Eisler.
