Haas was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1924, and he and his family immigrated to the United States in 1938.
Haas was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he served as a consultant to many bodies in academia, publishing, government and international organizations, including the U.S. Department of State, the United Nations and the Commission on Global Governance.
Haas was married to the late Hildegarde Vogel Haas for 57 years.

Surely there is an element of authenticity in the desire of young people to live close to nature.

Ernst Haas, a distinguished political scientist on the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley, has been doing empirical research on the performance of the UN Collective Security System at least since the 1960s (Haas 1968).
By "abating," Haas means the lessening or termination of hostilities, of rival claims, of intervention and propaganda, and the initiation or acceptance of negotiations and third-party intercessions.

I forgot to mention, before Haas became a pioneering color photographer, he was a superb fl-and-white photographer in the great documentary/street/humanistic tradition.

I remember how excited I was over the impact these made on me with their subtle use of colour and the wonderful effects of pushing the film to its limits by enlarging the image until the image broke down into dots of colour.
When Haas died in 1987, the Institute offered them to the Centre as a memorial to Haas and a tribute to the wonderful spirit which the Focus tour had engendered amongst all those who had participated.
Currently the NZ Centre for Photography is exploring the possibility of touring these Ernst Haas photographs around the country.

The Ernst Haas Memorial Collection was formed in 1998 to celebrate the artistic legacy of the photographer Ernst Haas (1921-1986) and his long relationship with The Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockport, Maine.
The Collection consists of 100 works by outstanding living photographers who have worked with or been inspired by Haas, and/or have been connected with The Maine Photographic Workshops, where Haas taught for many summers, or Magnum Photos, of which Haas was a member until 1960.
