An out-of-court settlement in the £2bn legal battle between Equitable Life and its former auditor Ernst and Young appears to be inching closer, it emerged yesterday.
Following a recent admission from Ernst and Young that it might be willing to negotiate a settlement in the case, there were hints yesterday that the scandal-hit insurer might be prepared to accept a fraction of this sum.
But, to complicate matters, Ernst and Young yesterday ap peared to taking a more combative stance - a month after its UK chairman, Nick Land, said that a settlement was not out of the question.
