TS: Madonna's "Like A Prayer" vs "Erotica"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Erotica is a lot of people's favorite Maddie studio album, and while it's not mine, lately it's got the edge over Like A Prayer because the dance stuff is insistent and quietly sleazy in a way that the Sex book wasn't and even the best LAP songs aren't.
Everything about the song is glorious: the use of synth-bass and regular bass, the live drums, how the choir subtly enters as the song builds in drama during the "Life is a mystery..." section.
Erotica is the pinnacle of Madonna's career in terms of full lengths, I think.

By depersonalizing herself to a mocking extreme, the Madonna of Erotica is sexy in only the most objectified terms, just as the album is only in the most literal sense what it claims to be.

 Rico Esteban's review of "Music"
A song like "Mer Girl" could be labeled as boring, but the location at the end of the ROL album and the topic that it´s about, makes its atmosphere perfect.
I remember liking the song, but the truth is, I can´t remember its melody after two spins of the full album, and I do remember some melodies from most of the songs from the CD.
I wouldn´t have thought it was Madonna because, as it happens in "Nobody´s perfect", the use of the vocoder obligates her to not use the vibrato in her way of singing, which is kind of a trademark of her singing style from "The Girlie Show" onwards.

Madonna released EROTICA around the same time she released her Sex book, and that's exactly what it sounds like.
The title song has a sensuously static groove over which she commands, "put your hands all over my body." "Where Life Begins" demands that you do something a whole lot more intimate (and quite unrepeatable here) to her.
At her naughtiest and most R-rated, Madonna still carries a message, and it resonates well beyond the dance floor.
