All about the green compound men would be sauntering in their Sunday's best, walking with those lax joints of the reposing toiler, thoughtfully smoking, talking small, as if in honour of the stillness, or hearkening to the wailing of the gulls.
Dubh Artach, the rock lighthouse for which Erraid was the shore station, has been automated.
Erraid is presently owned by a Dutch family, but managed by the Findhorn Foundation, who for the last 20 years have cared for the island and its environs.

Erraid was an excellent source of kelp - and still is; maybe the lower croft ruins belonged once to kelp workers.
It was in the 1860s that Erraid's history began to diverge from that of the areas on Mull surrounding it, for both literary and industrial reasons....
In May of 1867, David Stevenson visited Erraid to begin offloading materials and equipment onto Dubh Artach, to set out buoys marking dangers for the passage between the Rock and Erraid, and to stake out the position and extent of the ground to be utilised for the shore station.

I was very fortunate in my younger days in the 1960s to have as a good friend and mentor an elderly lady called Ella Horsey, who spent seven years living on Erraid as a semi-recluse and writer, from 1952 to 1959.
It was she who introduced me at an ealy age to many of the lesser-known and awe-inspiring aspects of Iona, as well as the fine craftwork of Iain MacCormick.
She published a book of her island experiences entitled 'Erraid - Seven Years on a Scottish Islet' (Regency Press, 1967) which can still occasionally be located through specialist book searches.
