Error function - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In mathematics, the error function (also called the Gauss error function) is a non-elementary function which occurs in probability, statistics and partial differential equations.
The error function is essentially identical to the standard normal cumulative distribution function, denoted Φ, as they differ only by scaling and translation.
The integral defining the error function cannot be evaluated in closed form in terms of elementary functions, but the integrand may be expanded in a power series and integrated term by term.

In (b)-(g), the function is shown as a dotted line, and the neural net approximation (based on the noisy samples shown as circles) is shown as the solid line.
Here, the underlying function to be approximated is a sine wave, and is a perturbation term, producing small "blips" or kinks near the peaks of the sine curve.
Similar to the previous case, the error plot is shown in (a), and the neural net approximation at various stages during learning are shown in (b)-(g).

 The OSLO Error Function
Unlike the GENII error function, the OSLO standard error function is based more on mathematics than optics, using rays laid out in a ring-spoke pattern to minimize the spot size or rms wavefront averaged over the field of view.
Error function terms can be generated for all zoom configurations at once, or added to previously defined terms, thereby permitting customization of the default error function.
The error function is thus somewhat less efficient than the GENII error function used in OSLO EDU and OSLO Light.

Error functions are also called "loss" functions, especially when the two usages of the term "error" would sound silly when used together.
The average error is also called the "empirical risk." Using the average error instead of the total error is especially convenient when using batch backprop-type training methods where the user must supply a learning rate to multiply by the negative gradient to compute the change in the weights.
A common approach to improving generalization error is regularization, i.e., trying to minimize an objective function that is the sum of the total error function and a regularization function.

For continuous objective functions that lack derivatives on certain manifolds, such as ramp activation functions (which lack derivatives at the top and bottom of the ramp) and the least-absolute-value error function (which lacks derivatives for cases with zero error), subgradient methods can be used.
Functions such as tanh or arctan that produce both positive and negative values tend to yield faster training than functions that produce only positive values such as logistic, because of better numerical conditioning (see ftp://ftp.sas.com/pub/neural/illcond/illcond.html).
Radial combination functions are based on the Euclidean distance between the vector of inputs to the unit and the vector of corresponding weights.

 The GENII Error Function
The GENII error function, ncorporated in OSLO EDU, uses multiple items of data from each traced ray to build a compact error function that is well-suited to interactive design.
The use of tolerances simplifies the interpretation of the error function by effectively establishing a common unit of measure for different types of operands.
The default error function from GENII has a consistent set of targets and tolerances to control classical aberrations, i.e., it is assumed that the lens is rotationally symmetric.

The city-block error function is less sensitive to outlying points than the sum-squared error function (where a disproportionate amount of the error can be accounted for by the worst-behaved cases).
The cross-entropy error function is specially designed for classification problems, where it is used in combination with the logistic (single output) or softmax (multiple output) activation functions in the output layer of the network.

 PHP: trigger_error - Manual
So, if you try to call a class function from within the error handler function, you will get 'Call to a member function on a non-object' error, even if this function works perfectly in the rest of your script.
the biggest problem is that, with call time pass by reference deprecated, you can't manipulate the error handler class after assigning at as the error handler (and it appears not to be returned by the set_error_handler method as the old error handler).
Use trigger_error() after you used set_error_handler() to register your own callback function which either logs or emails the error codes to you, and echo a simple friendly message to the user.
