Errors, freaks, and oddities - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In philately, "errors, freaks, and oddities" or "EFO" is a blanket term referring to all the kinds of things that can go wrong when producing postage stamps.
The yellow-inverted error of the US 1962 Dag Hammarskjöld memorial is perhaps the most common of all errors, having being printed in large quantities to prevent speculation after the error was discovered.
An error is any sort of production mistake that is (potentially) replicated on many stamps; the famous Inverted Jenny is the best known of these, having resulted from a sheet of partial prints being accidentally re-inserted into the printing press upside down for the second color, resulting in an invert error.

Production errors and freaks add excitement
Errors of color occur either when the wrong ink is used by the printer during stamp production or the wrong design element is entered into the printing plate.
Watermark errors are classified by some collectors as paper errors because the stamp is clearly printed on a paper other than the one intended for the issue.
Even though they are considered freaks rather than errors, misaligned colors may be of interest to specialist collectors of errors, freaks and oddities, or to specialist collectors of the Tom Sawyer commemorative stamp.

Errors versus errors, freaks and oddities
Errors, freaks and oddities: These three words, frequently bandied about in stamp collecting, are nearly as frequently misunderstood.
A freak is a stamp with irregularities that make it different from a normal stamp of the same issue but that do not qualify it as a major error.
Freaks may be caused by color misregistrations, paper folds, creases, foreign objects, ink starvation, badly aligned or badly worn perforating devices, or mysterious forces.

eBay Guides - What is an ERROR, FREAK, OR ODDITY
Examples of freaks are when the stamps are perforated but the perforations go through the design of the stamps or the colors were printed but shifted to make the design appear to doubled or blurry.
An oddity is very similar to a freak and may even be called a freak at times.
Example of oddities are when all processes of the stamp production are completed but faults in the equipment printing the stamps have occurred creating such anomalies as over inking, under inking, ink blobs and paper folds which will alter the appearance of the stamps.

EFO - an acronym for "Errors, Freaks and Oddities"
The most famous U.S. errors are the inverts, for example the upside down airplane Scott C3a, but the term also applies to imperforate stamps that were intended to be perforated, or perforated stamps that have an improper perforation, as well as stamps missing a color or colors.
What distinguishes "errors" from their cousins, the freaks and oddities, is that an error must be a major production mistake.

In the case of imperforate errors, if there is one perforation hole, or even an indentation created by a perforation pin (the device which punches the hole into the stamp paper), then the stamp is not a true error.
Imperforate errors are usually collected in pairs or larger groups, as it is extremely difficult to tell a true imperforate error from a trimmed stamp.
Freaks are often caused by mechanical means, not human error.

 efo
An Error is defined as a philatelic item that has something wrong in its design or in its production that makes it different from the stated design; this can be in the perforations, colour or printing.
In some instances, these result in very dramatic changes in the appearance of the stamps, which are commonly referred to as Freaks and Oddities.
All such errors or imperfections are supposed to be withdrawn and destroyed and are not intended to reach the general public.

John Hotchner's Guide To U.S. Errors, Freaks and Oddities
The problem is that EFO information is so dispersed in the vast quantity of wonderful philatelic literature that collectors have generated in the last 150+ years, that the collector of such material has had to cope with four knowledge gaps:
Freaks, also called "varieties" by some, are generally defined to be of a lesser degree of production problem, and problems which are partial and not exactly repeatable.
For instance, a paper fold (freak) may result in a miscut booklet pane containing a pair of stamps imperf between (error), or an inkwell running out of ink may deposit a minimal amount on one row of stamps (freak) and none on the adjoining row (error).

Stamporama Discussion Board: Explanation of Canadian EFO's (Errors, Freaks & Oddities)
I frequently see the term "EFO" for "Errors, Freaks, and Oddities," but I've never been sure what the differences are, if any.
So, if I understand this lesson, "EFO's" are really a catch-all term for a number of different varieties, any of which may or may not end up being catalogued.
Oddities and freaks stand alone as single examples of varieties.

But most errors are caught and destroyed in the printing plant - it is the relatively few that are missed and reach the public that concern us here.
Here's an example of an "imperf error", i.e., a case where the stamps failed to receive the perforations they should have had, and were released in error.
This error occurs only in position LR100 of plate 21590, and results from an incomplete transfer from the die roll to the plate, so it occurs on all LR panes with this plate number.

Perforation related errors, and the majority of the color error categories were covered in the first two installments.
This sort of error needs to be differentiated from the partial offset from wet ink, and the "stuck-stamps" offset that is too frequently offered as an error by those who don't know better, or know better but prey on the gullible.
The error is associated with stamps printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. between 1957 and 1980 on the sheet-fed Giori-type presses, on pregummed paper.

Oddities - the "O" in "EFO" (errors, freaks and oddities).

Alphabetilately: I is for Invert Error
An Invert Error is a production error (see my EFO's page for more about Errors, Freaks, and Oddities) in which one part of a stamp's design is printed upside-down.
The error was discovered by several different people soon after the stamp was issued, so it would never have been as scarce as the Jenny, nor as valuable, since it lacks the visual appeal.
The most famous Canadian Invert Error is the stamp on the right above, which occurred on the 1959 Joint Issue of the US and Canada, to commemorate the opening of the Saint Lawrence Seaway.

Then there are the true errors, the "freaks and oddities" if you will, that resulted from some breakdown in the printing process, either mechanical or human.
Regardless of the product or the medium, mistakes happen, and part of the fun of collecting, whether it be stamps, coins, trade cards, or whatever, is occasionally running across those mistakes that sneaked by whatever "quality control" measures might've been in place to prevent those slip-ups from ever seeing the light of day.
I intend to use this section of the site to provide a consolidated listing of all those printing errors of which I'm currently aware, for those collectors who might also have an interest in keeping an eye out for such things.

As in previous editions, the catalogue is well laid out, with reasonably true colour illustrations adjacent to the stamp listings.
One of the strengths of the Darnell Catalogue has always been the error listings, commonly referred to as E.F.O.s, or errors, freaks, and oddities, for stamp varieties that are not recorded and priced in other catalogues.
Unfortunately, the variety illustrations that are not incorporated into the listings, have been dropped from this catalogue, but will appear in a separate, hundred page volume to be released in 2003.
