Erstwhile Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Erstwhile Records is an independent record label devoted to free improvisation.
Erstwhile was founded by Jon Abbey in 1999, and his knowledgeable (but highly opinionated) personality and tastes are closely identified with the label.
The label's output is often controversial even among longstanding fans of free jazz and free improvisation, partly because some recent released feature signifigant editing and overdubbing.

Recorded in May in 2002 in Nantes, Live at the LU finds the two musicians revisiting old pathways, further exploring territory they've separately mapped on records such as The Crypt, Harsh, and Hotel Paral.lel.
The festivals are closely tied to the Erstwhile label, and are designed to showcase an ambitious amount of music within a short time period, demanding increased attention and focus from both the musicians and the audience.
Aluminium was recorded during a marathon studio session in Vienna in April, and was brilliantly mastered by Tim Barnes.

Jon Abbey, head of Erstwhile Records and sponsor of the event, is aware of this pressing importance.
Perfectly titled, tint is one of the strongest releases in the Erstwhile oeuvre, a meditation on the gradations of both presence and timbre.
Granted, either of those excerpted records might have proven to be more valuable in terms of social influence than this Erstwhile release, but this box set is essentially a near-complete audio document of the event and its surrounding events, and for what it lacks in mass appeal, it certainly makes up for in thoroughness.

Erstwhile was founded in 1999 to document compelling and under recognized musicians.
Erstwhile seeks the middle ground between improvisation and composition, trained and self-taught, acoustic and electronic, organization and abstraction.
Erstwhile's main objective is to provoke and revive the weary ears of the jaded listener with unique and constantly evolving soundworlds.

Kurzmann is a co-leader of Orchester 33 1/3 with Christian Fennesz, runs Charhizma records, and appears on the self-titled improv document CD on Charhizma, along with Fennesz and Werner Dafeldecker, with guest performances by Kevin Drumm, Jim O'Rourke, and Martin Siewert.
This record's beauty is in the critical fact that it explores the differences in computer generated and acoustic music, unlike a forced marriage or a systematic clash.
It represents the first recording of Durrant exclusively using a computer, and points to a new direction for the London scene, one more organic and less directly rooted in the free improvisation of the 1980's.

Finally from Erstwhile, eh - a meeting of guitarist Burkhard Stangl and turntablist Dieb 13 - is simply one of the most rapturous recordings in recent memory.
Like all of Erstwhile's releases, eh is masterfully recorded, edited, and packaged - a major benefit, since eh requires numerous listens to unfold beyond the beauty of its elegant introduction and epilogue.
Erstwhile's Jon Abbey makes sure all his releases are superbly recorded, mastered and packaged - there's a distinctive Erstwhile look (the Friederike Paetzold graphics with minimal visible information) and, increasingly it seems, an Erstwhile sound: grainy, predominantly slow-moving, laminal (Phil Durrant's term) electroacoustic improvisation.

 Free improvisation
Perhaps the earliest free recordings are two songs by jazz pianist Lennie Tristano: "Intuition" and "Digression," both recorded in 1949 with a sextet including saxophone players Lee Konitz and Wayne Marsh.
Free music is a relatively little known, and somewhat loosely-defined genre, and none of its exponents can be said to be "famous" amongst the general public.
Many free music performers also record and perform other styles of music: Anthony Braxton has written opera, and John Zorn has written acclaimed orchestral pieces.

I think of Erstwhile more as a curated series than a record label, with each project a piece fitting into a larger puzzle, so it's unusual that projects I don't come up with myself are a perfect fit.
I’d prefer not to specifically go through record by record, but typically if Earl Howard is credited with working on the sound, it means that he and I did a fair amount of postproduction on that project.
I do think that postproduction is an under-explored option on recordings in the improv world, the purist attitude you mention is pretty old-fashioned to me. As long as the recordings are rooted in improvisation, I welcome the judicious use of postproduction, being careful to keep the energy of the improv intact.

Nobody reading this needs to be reminded that, over the last five years, Erstwhile Records has become one of the most influential—and frequently controversial—imprints documenting improvised music of any sort.
But this 27-minute concert recording is altogether more powerful and concise than its predecessor, not only because of the growth of the musicians in question but because of the strength and self-assuredness of the music itself.
As many times as I listen to this recording, it is impossible for me to tell from which player the sounds emanate (although midway through there is a brief, distorted snippet from “Happy Jack”, which is doubtless the product of Rowe’s radio mischief).

Keith Rowe, Thomas Lehn, & Marcus Schmickler - Rabbit Run - Stylus Magazine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
On Rabbit Run, three of Erstwhile’s most frequent contributors combine to create a wild, eclectic mish-mash that inserts the listener into an always-unpredictable cartoon world of falling anvils, exaggerated sound effects, and surrealist scenery.
This is the sequel to Erstwhile’s earlier release Bart, a collaboration between the very distinct synthesizer voices of Thomas Lehn and Marcus Schmickler; with the addition of unconventional guitarist Keith Rowe, the music is every bit as abrasive and schizophrenic as on Bart, but with an even greater catholicity of moods and sounds.
In this form, the music at times flows naturally from track to track, but just as often it shifts direction wildly without even a second’s notice, which adds to the feelings of total edge-of-your-seat listening that the trio inspires.
