Erta Ale is a remote, continually erupting desert volcano in Ethiopia located at 13.60?N, 40.67?E. The remoteness and the political instability of the region have made satellite remote sensing the only way to retrieve data on this volcano from 1976 till 1992.
This paper will review the geology of the volcano, the basics of volcano remote sensing, and will compare the Corona satellite photographs of the 1960's to the modern views of Erta Ale from SIR-C, Landsat, and on-site images.
