		Dopo la Caduta dell' Impero Romano, fu invasa dalle orde di popoli di origine barbarica (Goti, Eruli, Unni e Longobardi quest'ultima invasione è descritta da Paolo Diacono nella sua Historia Langobardarum).
		Le popolazioni delle antiche città assediate e distrutte si rifugiarono nelle zone più vicine al mare, dove fondarono i nuovi siti urbani di Torcello, Chioggia, Venezia, Caorle e Grado.
