Amazon.ca: Editorial Reviews Books: Fax From Sarajevo   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
In March 1992 Ervin Rustemagic, a well-regarded European comics agent, faxed a message from his Dutch office to the New Jersey home of his American friend and client, distinguished comics artist Kubert (Sgt. Rock; The Green Berets), detailing his plans to return to his home in the Sarajevo suburb of Dobrinja.
For the next two and a half years Rustemagic communicated with Kubert and supporters in Europe via sporadically functioning fax machines, recounting the city's destruction, the Serb brutality inadequate multinational peacekeeping force and the physical and spiritual deprivations of life in a war zone.
Kubert has used Rustemagic's faxed messages to recreate the family's experiences?a heartstopping nighttime dash across Sarajevo airport under fire; the deadly gauntlet of Serb snipers on the route between Dobrinja and Sarajevo?in a fl-and-white, book-length comics work that brilliantly documents a family's wartime survival and escape against unbelievable odds.

 Profile > Fax from Sarajevo
That was the year that Ervin Rustemagic and his family found themselves trapped in a city under siege.
Ervin had grown up in Sarajevo and had run his business from the city for more than a decade.
When the shells and gunfire tore the city asunder, Ervin's only efficient means of communication to the outside world was via his fax machine, through which he could send extended messages very quickly, messages which could be re-faxed to his many clients and friends.

 about SAF
Ervin loved his series "Casey Ruggles" and "Lance," which used to be published in the 1950's, but could not be found anywhere later on.
In October 1992, Ervin and his family moved to a room in the 'Holiday Inn' hotel in Sarajevo, half of which was open for foreign journalists only, while the other half was in ruins and under constant Serbian sniper and shell fire.
Ervin is proud of his young team, most of the guys being younger than SAF itself.

Sequential Tart: Why Now Is The Time To Read Fax From Sarajevo (vol V/iss 1/January 2002)
The Rustemagics, and the other citizens of Sarajevo and its environs, are reduced to living in near-primitive conditions.
One of the Rustemagic family's friends, whose family was butchered, manages to escape from a rape camp, and makes her way to the Rustemagics' shelter in search of safety.
Rustemagic's mother, though, wasn't so lucky; she was killed when a hospital where she had been taken was captured by Serbian troops.

In 1992, Joe Kubert's friend, Ervin Rustemagic, was trapped in Sarajevo with his family when the Serbs attacked.
Luckily, interspersed throughout the story are faxes sent back and forth between Ervin and his friends on the outside.
In one of his faxes, Ervin said, "If somebody was killing and massacring penguins the way Serbs are massacring Bosnian people, the world woud have intervened and would have taken stronger and faster measures".

Comics2Film - Ervin Rustemagic Talks About Jeremiah
This week Comics2Film talked with Ervin Rustemagic, an executive producer on the show and founder of Strip Art Features, the Slovenia based publisher who has been responsible for bringing Hermann Huppen's comic to the rest of the world.
Ervin Rustemagic: Hermann does all the work on the Jeremiah comics himself -- he writes it, he pencils the pages, he paints the colors and he letters the original French texts -- while my company SAF (Strip Art Features) is doing all the production work and prepares Jeremiah for publication in many languages.
To some publishers we only license the publishing rights and for some publishers we print the graphic novels at our own printing plant in Slovenia.

uBC: Dark Horse - Interview with Ervin Rustemagic
This excellent opportunity arose mostly thanks to Ervin Rustemagic - a European comics agent who was thrust into the American comics spotlight when Koe Kubert recorded Rustemagic's horrifying first-person account of a family's attempts to escape from war-torn Sarajevo on the pages of the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel Fax From Sarajevo.

Douglas (thelastcontinent.multiply.com) - Fax From Sarajevo
Ervin Rustemagic is a business partner turned personal friend of Joe Kubert's, and through several faxes between 1992 and 1993 he chronicled his experiences in Sarajevo, until he could finally escape from it with his family.
Between sequences of his top-of-the-trade graphical storytelling, the actual faxes exchanged are reproduced, reminding us that the fantastic scenes really happened, even though a little embelished and sometimes overly-dramatic (a sign of "old school" comic books, with lots of internal dialogue).
Ervin is a hero, even though he flees the conflict.

John Kubert's recent publication is drawn (in both senses) from the faxes sent to him by his close friend and fellow cartoonist Ervin Rustemagic whilst trapped in Sarajevo for 12 months between March 1992 and May 1993 with his wife and two children.
In the comic Rustemagic, a cartoonist himself, is portrayed as becoming unable to distinguish between reality and cartoon fiction during one particularly hair-raising episode of his long struggle to get his family out of Bosnia.
The story of Rustemagic and his family's attempts to survive the incessant attacks by the Serbs and secure their escape from Sarajevo is broken down into bite size episodes, each accompanied by copies of the faxes that Kubert received from Rustemagic.

SAVANT:: Essential   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Kubert’s tale is rooted in his personal relationship with Rustemagic, who communicated with the outside world throughout the nearly two-year ordeal by means of fax machine.
As presented here, Rustemagic relies on fax machines as his lifeline; no matter where the family goes during the course of Fax, Rustemagic is driven to find a fax machine in order to send off his latest dispatch to his friends.
It’s as much an effort to give those abroad a sense of the atrocities committed in Sarajevo as it is an attempt to retain Rustemagic’s own sanity, to reassure himself that somewhere beyond the war-torn city, there’s peace and calm.

Ervin had nothing to rely on but the tenuous lifeline of a fax machine to communicate with his friends during the war.
From hundreds of faxes detailing everything from the atrocities committed in the name of ethnic cleansing to the ever-present fears and frustrations of the Rustemagic family, Kubert has expertly pieced together a truly heart-wrenching story of a very real tragedy and, ultimately, of unflagging hope.

The artwork was nothing special, and the story/dialogue was a bit melodramatic and over-dramatized for my tastes, but the story itself was compelling and interesting.
