 Reflections on Historical Time
Panofsky developed this chronology in the process of trying to reconstruct the building history because he found it necessary to use the stylistic attributes of the sculpture and sculptural decoration and their position on the building to determine when certain architectural elements were put in place.
In attempting to connect the stylistic development of the sculpture to the building history, Panofsky discovered that there were limitations to applying stylistic change in establishing chronology because the presence of disparate styles in the same period of time seemed to contradict the possibility of drawing parallels between stylistic and historical developments.
Panofsky outlined the process by which it is possible to connect the cultural order and the natural order through the symbolic form of historical time.

Panofsky's treatment of the biographical details of Durer's life - including the revelationn that he was unhappily married - leads to a long, shapeless, rambling account, governed more by the intricate chronology of Durer's artistic production than any profound sense of the man himself.

Kubler, using Panofsky’s Principle of Disjunction argues that disjunction of form and meaning is more common than continuity.
One of the primary theorists of Art History, Erwin Panofsky, defined three levels of meaning involved in an iconographic approach.
Intrinsic knowledge, rather than familiarity, is required for the interpretation of symbolical values and the intrinsic meaning or content, or what Panofsky terms "synthetic intuition (Panofsky 1972:14-15)." By comparison of all other works and decoration of the period we can arrive at intrinsic meaning.

In the mid-1920's the Art Historian Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968) published Perspective As Symbolic Form, a provocative title.
At first boldly controversial, during the last half of the Twentieth Century, it became increasingly commonplace in theories of Art to refer to Panofsky and to discuss Perspective illustration as a "symbol".
It is hard for me to overcome the conclusion that Panofsky's book title, Perspective As Symbolic Form, was created to be little more than a sensational headline, a show of sympathy and support for the new abstract Modern Art of the 1920's.
