Contrary to the prevailing research on this topic, the study proves that Bertolt Brecht is not the inventor of epic theater.
It shows that Erwin Piscator incorporated the essential elements of epic theater in his theater productions long before Brecht's first formulation of the theory of epic theater.
The study then presents a chronological, comparative analysis of the characteristics of epic theater and the purpose of epic theater as practiced by Brecht and Piscator during the period of 1926 - 1933, the emigration, and the return of Brecht to Germany from the United States.
